That "smile" dvd is certainly mastered from a lower bitrate mp4 though. It is very blocky when it shouldn't be (you don't get blocking like that at 6mb/s). It'd be better if we could find the original mp4 share. Otherwise it is probably the best image, although somebody shared one a while back that was pretty good too (and had the spoken intro).

Good point sir, if anyone can send me the MP4, let me know!

Is everyone having to 'Buy' the movie? I'm on Prime, but it's not showing as 'free'

It’s not free. You can either rent it or buy it.

A few years ago on here someone shared a DVD-R of a 2011 broadcast of the shorter USA version. I remember the quality being the best I’d ever seen. I must’ve lost my download of it but does anyone else have it that they could please share?

When was it on the BBC? For someone to make an mp4 they must have had to make a capture. What we need is an original tv capture at a high bitrate, then just slow it down to 23.976 and apply some dirt cleanup and colour correction.

Somebody out there must have videotaped it and still has it.

I have an mp4 of the European print and comparing it to the BBC broadcast it is similar but a bit softer. I think the BBC showing would be the best source but the smile dvd is obviously sourced from a rather low bitrate mp4. It should look better than that.

I have a 4gb mkv European version that looks slightly cleaner than the Smile DVD. It has all the extended aspects, aside from the opening and closing sequences that seem to be specific to the BBC/Prime version. I must have downloaded it from here, but who knows? Links below

So I went back and had another crack at the audio.

Now, the problem with this film for me even though I like it very much has always been the terrible singing. The noise the lead vocalist makes is something like what I'd imagine you'd get if you took someone, put a clothes peg on their nose, and then grabbed hold of their tongue and pulled as hard as you could while asking them to sing Dizzy Miss Lizzy. He's that bad. :)

By contrast the backing isn't too bad and at least less jarring than what was heard in Backbeat. So I've taken the logical step and dispensed with Mr Strangulation and replaced him with the real Beatles. Here are two clips, Dizzy Miss Lizzy and Roll Over Beethoven.

Be warned, this will mess with your head. But it actually sounds okay!
