To be honest I get a little confused when I hear people talk about that. Maybe I haven't heard enough ELO, but neither of those songs sounded that odd to me. The drums are quite "big" but they don't seem that different to the drums in the Pepper period to me. They were going for an 80s sound I think... certainly by 1995 that sort of sound was past history. But if they'd done it like Nirvana it probably wouldn't have worked!
Well, you need to listen to some Jeff Lynne-produced stuff from that era, not 70's ELO, to discover that "he has a sound, you know" (I seem to recall Paul saying that somewhere). One can love it or loathe it, but he used that precise sound, with the "big drums", with all the acts he produced from the mid-80's to the mid-90's, and that includes his work with the Threetles.

I guess you must be familiar with the Traveling Wilburys or everything he did with the ex-Beatles, but listen to this, Jeff Lynne productions from 1988-1992 :
Jeff Lynne - Every Little Thing : https://youtu.be/OxY63jXeZ_E?feature=shared
Jeff Lynne - Stormy Weather (with George on guitar) https://youtu.be/31Tkh1yBLU4?feature=shared
Tom Petty - I Won't Back Down (with George on guitar) https://youtu.be/nvlTJrNJ5lA?feature=shared
Tom Petty - Two Gunslingers https://youtu.be/_x8dIyRTKHo?feature=shared
Joe Cocker - Night Calls https://youtu.be/gh9-P1FuB7c?feature=shared
Roy Orbison - Heartbreak Radio https://youtu.be/1PlFb7qjg-s?feature=shared
Brian Wilson - Let It Shine https://youtu.be/oidf_mSxxIc?feature=shared
...and more : https://youtu.be/oKvCS7nXHe4?feature=shared

I hope that's enough to make my point ;). I'm a Jeff Lynne admirer, I like this sound which I was introduced to with "Cloud 9", but I can understand people who dislike it because it's "always the same". It's interesting to note that he was much more light-handed when he produced "Brainwashed".

I don't much like the big drum sound because it sounds very dated. In fact I often deverb the 80s songs that I do like, because otherwise I feel like a sad old grandpa listening to them. And they just sound better without all that echo.

I can do a Free As A Bird without ANY drums if people think that would be worthwhile?

I would like "free as a bird" with another drums and not one that reminds me of ELO

I like the drums on Free As A Bird if we’re weighing in on the matter.

Is there any chance that you could share the backing track version of Real Love as well? And thanks a lot for your edit of these tracks!
