THE BEATLES on JUKE BOX JURY (BBC TV, 7th December 1963)
With the video long lost, an audio recording of the TV broadcast was found by the BBC in 2001 and from this I have tried to improve the sound quality and restore the missing introductions at the start of the episode.
The Beatles star in a special edition of BBC television’s “Juke Box Jury” recorded live in front of a home crowd at Liverpool’s Empire Theatre from 2.30pm until 3.15pm on Saturday 7th December 1963. The 2,500-strong audience were all members of ‘The Beatles Northern Area Fan Club Convention’. Juke Box Jury was a weekly BBC programme featuring a panel of four celebrities who were given the task of rating newly released singles as a 'HIT' or a 'MISS' based on their personal opinions of the record’s potential to make the UK charts. When the Beatles appeared as the four panelists for this episode they rated the latest 45s by artists like Elvis, Steve & Eydie, Bobby Vinton, Billy Fury, and the Merseybeats. Most of the predictions the boys made on this episode proved to be correct, and only three of their predictions turned out to be wrong. This “on location” episode was hosted as usual by BBC radio DJ David Jacobs sitting next to a juke box which played the selected new releases. Juke Box Jury was broadcast on BBC television later that evening between 6.05pm and 6.35pm, and watched by an estimated 23 million people across the UK. Thirty minutes”.
The 10 Singles played on this episode are:-
I Could Write A Book - The Chants
Kiss Me Quick - Elvis Presley
The Hippy Hippy Shake - The Swinging Blue Jeans
Did You Have A Happy Birthday - Paul Anka
The Nitty Gritty Song - Shirley Ellis
I Can’t Stop Talking About You - Steve Lawrence & Eydie Gormé
Do You Really Love Me - Billy Fury
There I’ve Said It Again - Bobby Vinton
Love Hit Me - The Orchids
I Think Of You - The Merseybeats
Three more records – Broken Home by Shirley Jackson, Where Have You Been All My Life by Gene Vincent, and Long Time Ago by The Bachelors were cut from the broadcast, although The Beatles voted these three to be Hits.
After this BBC tele-recording the fab four played a live concert in this theatre for the fans in the audience, before departing for the nearby Odeon theatre where they performed a further two concerts - highlights of their first show at the Odeon were broadcast on BBC TV that same night at 8.10pm in a half-hour programme called “It’s The Beatles!”.
Brian Epstein joked “For today, the initials B.B.C. stand for “The Beatles Broadcasting Corporation!!”
