Ferry Cross The Mersey

Post by fabwill »

I listened to the recent repeat of a BBC drama about Brian Epstein and his last few days. It has a LOT of references to him producing the Gerry & The Pacemakers movie Ferry Cross The Mersey. It would appear that it wasn't a very good film, but that hasn't stopped me watching Caveman, Lisztomania, Broad St, Sextette, Shanghai Surprise or 200 Motels, so why would I stop now?

Can anyone help?

Depending on your location, you might be able to watch it here

I suspect the original film will never be reissued or made available officially without some cuts, since Jimmy Savile features in it a lot, MC-ing the concert sequences. You have been warned.

You know what crappy old pop movie I really like?

Hold On! with Herman's Hermits. If you think the plot of Help! is far-fetched, you aint seen nothin'!

Plus, despite the cheese factor they were actually a pretty good group.

This movie hasn't been on more than five minutes.
Was Epstein in for high stakes? He's lucky Marsden didn't become Mersey Side's Ferry Suicide!
When was this filmed, Fifteen minutes after The Beatles plane departed to America?
It looks like 3/4 of the population has left the country. Direction in total: Step where the Beatles stepped. Dialog will be dubbed.
Anemic!!! Pure humiliation and depression for Marsden! Poor bastard! His career never even had a pulse to match the movie! So, let us state The Obvious: There was NOT a music scene in the UK at this time. The Brits were all hanging on to the American Rhythm and Blues Tours...to visit once a year. Don't worry, there wasn't nearly the scene in U.S. either. The Beatles ARE the music industry. The soundtrack of every day life...is also the Beatles. Western Culture didn't mean ANYTHING compared to what was turning left at Greenland in an airplane on Feb. 7th. Say goodbye to contrivance. The military didn't even know of10 megaton kinetic wet-panty weaponry! This movie and everything else, despite their most sincere objectives were merely set dressing for the ONLY music, so far, that isn't a scripted act. There was no British Invasion. This movie is an instructional textbook for UK 1964 postwar rejuvenation of economics! The Beatles are the WHOLE of all music as of right now thanks to this movie. HOLD ON was really HELP but this movie is really MANDRAX! I can't imagine how Guitar companies survived the reality of Ferry.
Thank you, HelenWheels!
A movie unlike any other!
Beatles make everything look good.

The great thing about Hold On! Was that it plays just like a 70’s US TV show..it even has some familiar faces in it like Herbert Anderson and Bernard Fox.

Ferry Cross the Mersey needs a proper release..which I too will assume we’ll never get to see and god forbid it gets released with the Jimmy Saville scenes intact. It’s a real period piece and the scenes around Liverpool look amazing. Correct me if I’m wrong but doesn’t Neil Aspinall(or the estate of) own the rights to this film??

Thanks for this. At 1:06:40 is The Fourmost singing 'I Love You Yoo'. I remember this was on a few Beatles bootlegs in the early 80s as a supposed outtake sung by Paul. Was it on Indian Rope Trick? I think that's the one I heard it on.
