Revolver (Stereo Franken-Master) - My Weird Experiment

Post by Bianju »

I was pleased to have the excellent late 70s German Apple pressing of Revolver shared here a few weeks ago by Venus and Mars. The bass on that pressing is incredible, but it seems age had an adverse effect on the already often shrill treble of this stereo mix. I think it's become clear that much of the issues we know with Revolver's mastering stem from how to fit the incredible loudness of it all onto a vinyl record. So, I had the idea to combine the excellent low end of the Apple pressing with the high end of a more reliable, un-distorted source for the high end to create a more dynamic version of the original 1966 stereo mix. I at first tried this with the 1987 Disque Americ CD but found the synchronization impossible, so instead I used the Japanese 1969 Reel to Reel pressing which I shared here earlier today (which, because of it coming from this era of Japanese hi-fi has the low end almost totally muted). I don't want to say my results are perfect, but the bass-heavy tracks have really been improved through this method.

I hope you all enjoy a very different sound to Revolver!

This is cool and seems to work! It's in sync so that's most of it ;-)

My next thought:

Stem this out and do a vocals-centered remix with this same dynamic range.

Yes the high end can be a little "brittle" which I just chalk up to Geoff Emerick pushing the 10k EQ up a bit too much.

I mean, when the alternative is the high-end getting totally buried under overwhelming bass, you can hardly blame him.
