The problem was that in the UK, 'jelly babies' are soft, squidgy sweets. In other places, fans threw the nearest equivalent, 'jelly beans' which were hard coated candy, which must have been like throwing bullets at the fab four. When it came to throwing things on the stage, Tom Jones had it easy

One of the funniest things about The Beatles Washington '64 video is that throughout, they are pelted with jellybeans. The crowd is really hucking them at them. Some of the fans have impeccable aim. I think Ringo gets (jelly)beaned in the head at one point.
