Yellow Dog Question

I always thought this was a creepy pair of images: this is from my LP of "Watching Rainbows", for anybody interested enough to want to know.




There's probably someone here who might know if "Ruthless Rhymes Ltd." is the same as "Yellow Dog": there must be some connection between the two, methinks...

It's taken from a 1973 issue of National Lampoon magazine.



Nothing more sinister than the bootleggers having a laugh, and possible making a joke about Nipper in the old HMV advertising.

The label/sleeve were designed to seem as though it was a German-made product, but it now seems to me that the whole package was probably made in the U.S.A. by fans of National Lampoon! The sleeve is of the "thick 'n' sturdy cardboard with a printed paper wrap pasted upon it" variety that were common to American LPs in the good ol' days.

For years they were using comp tapes assembled by the people who had the tapes. They then bought the set and the "Day By Day" series was the result.

RE: Watching Rainbows
Yes, it's U.S.. The original issue had a pink back and featured the French radio tape of "Madman" and "Watching Rainbows" which runs a little longer than the Nagra. The second issue replaced these with a better quality (but shorter) on-line tape.

Thanks for clarifying that, Doug! I had a feeling that a lower-generation tape source being used was the reason why the "Day By Day" set sounds good!

Does it have to be actual Yellow Dog? I just got an Ultra Rare Trax Vol. 4, but it's an Italian reissue. I'm presuming quality wouldn't be any different. (I can't notice a difference.)

I remember when the Genuine Pig discs started appearing on the streets of Tokyo.

These are clones of The Swingin' Pig, rather than Yellow Dog. There were a few other Italian companies that cloned these discs. Was it Oil Well that cloned UR3 ad UR4?

I remember the first time I saw/heard Ultra Rare Trax 1. Blew my mind!

A lot of Yellow Dog's stuff is sourced from Minidisc. It was a popular format at one time. I think the compression was pretty good though, not like a low bitrate mp3.

Minidisc used encoding called ATRAC which was lossy. (I believe there was a truly lossless minidisc as well, later.) Here's some comparisons I did a few years ago.

CD ripped with EAC (Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon)


The same thing, but recorded to and re-transferred from minidisc.
