1966-04-16

Next up, 16 Apr and they're finishing Rain:

Apr 16th 1966 – Studio Two, 2:30pm-1:30am

01. Rain – Bass and tambourine – Probably overdubbed. RS says it’s an overdub, TMF says it was part
of the basic take recorded on a separate track, RTB says it’s an overdub using the same ‘speaker-as-
microphone technique’ they used on Paperback Writer. If it is an overdub, then what’s Paul playing
on the basic take? One of the sources says Paul is playing one of the guitars; if so, then what would
George be playing? To me it sounds like George on guitar. From one of the dvd 5.1 isolated tracks.

02. Rain – John’s double-tracking of the chorus lead vocal, from the dvd 5.1 isolated SL and SR
channels; double-tracking on the right. In the subsequent reduction mix these two vocal tracks were
combined onto one track to free one up for the backing vocals. The use of ADT on select words or
phrases is also clearly heard.

03. Rain – backwards vocal section reversed, then as it appears on record. GM recalls doing this on his
own; John remembers hearing the whole track backwards and initiating the whole thing.

04. Rain – backing vocals from the right channel isolation. Paul can be heard "practicing(?)" in the
background, also singing an extra off-mic high harmony that wasn't used.

05. Rain – mono mix RM4, from the 3-inch cd single.

1966-04-17 has the lads working on Doctor Robert:

hxxps://drive.google.com/file/d/1cD2o6gzgsh_CuzWkLhaScKPIztfONom8/view?usp=sharing

Apr 17th 1966 – Studio Two, 2:30-10:30pm

01. Doctor Robert – take 7 – Only the basic rhythm track was recorded at this session. All vocals
and overdubs were recorded two days later; ML says everything but vocals at this session but has
no note of an SI, and with the following session running over 9 hours it seems likely more was done
than just the vocals. Vocals were removed from the previous version of this track with mvsep demucs3
model B, although some remnants remain. The lead guitar was overdubbed later. ML has George on
maracas, Paul on piano (I don't hear a piano). Or, Paul could have been playing bass on the basic
take but recorded to another track, and if that's just John on guitar (it almost sounds like 2 guitars
at times) then George could indeed be doing the percussion. The performance lasted 2:56 but was always
edited down to 2:13. What were the 43 seconds that were edited off?

02. Doctor Robert - take 7 (speculation) - A loop of a verse and middle 8 runs for 41 seconds, so it's
possible that's what was edited out. Here is that 41 second loop from the middle of the song (loop it
and it will play continuously).

03. Doctor Robert - take 7 with the above bit added in, bringing it up to 2:57 in length, darn close
to what the original performance was supposed to have been. Though for all we know there could have
been another unheard section of the song that was totally different.

1966-04-19 it's overdubs for Doctor Robert, difficult to split apart but better than previous attempts:

hxxps://drive.google.com/file/d/1kSVy3lf44_qi5TrXhSVMTWo_ssNlII7X/view?usp=sharing

Apr 19th 1966 – Studio Two, 2:30pm-12:00am

28. Doctor Robert – SI onto take 7 – Was the bass an overdub or part of the basic take on a different
track? This song has the same curious lineup as Rain with the bass on its own track for no good reason
unless as an advantage for mono mixing (if it in fact wasn’t an overdub). If it was an overdub, then
we have the same question as on Rain: what is Paul playing on the basic take? Are there in fact two
guitarists playing the complicated-sounding rhythm figure? The harmonium was a separate overdub on a
third track.

29. Doctor Robert – SI onto take 7 - vocals and lead guitar – The vocals and lead guitar are all treated
with ADT, therefore the lead guitar can’t be on any of the three previously recorded un-ADT’d tracks.
It must therefore be on the same fourth track with the vocals, so George is doing double duty again as he
did on PW (hitting the single notes as he joins in on the "well well well" part). This track is derived
mainly from the far left of the stereo mix, then treated with mvsep to reduce the backing and highlight
the vocal overdub.

20th April:

hxxps://drive.google.com/file/d/1usZbk-lpbhnEMhLkmcR0p4a9BDMx8Q4S/view?usp=sharing

Apr 20th 1966 – Studio Two, 2:30pm-2:30am

1. And Your Bird Can Sing – Take 2 – Basic take, the left channel extraction from the combined
FL and FR tracks from the dvd 5.1 mix.

2. And Your Bird Can Sing – Take 2 lead vocal overdub – Center channel extraction from the
combined FL and FR tracks from the dvd 5.1 mix. This has to have been the second track recorded
because on the next one John dubbles his lead vocal only in the middle 8’s; the complete vocal
performance would have been recorded first. The question here is whether or not George is on
high harmony lead guitar, or whether it was punched in (either before or after the following
overdub) and could thusly have been either George or Paul. There’s a jump in the tape at 1:20 at
the end of the first solo on John’s ‘when…’, a bit of fade-in at 1:50 when the end solo starts,
and a bit of ‘…eee’ leakage at 1:56 which sounds like a missed punch-in. Is this George ‘learning’
the riff, or Paul ‘learning the harmony to it’?

3. And Your Bird Can Sing – Take 2 overdub - Right channel extraction from the combined FL and FR
tracks from the dvd 5.1 mix. Ringo on tambourine, Paul on bass, John dubbling his lead vocal, and
George playing the low harmony lead guitar part.

4. And Your Bird Can Sing – Take 2 overdub – SL and SR channels from the dvd 5.1 mix.
