Re: Real Love (new 2024 mix)
We don't know that they haven't done FAAB or Real Love, they probably didn't want to release them now as they will steal the thunder from Now and Then.billylentz wrote: ↑Wed Nov 08, 2023 3:41 pm Thank you, Lord Reith! Sounds and looks amazing! Very interesting listen!
This also makes me stop to acknowledge what an impressive job "Free as a bird" and "Real love" were back in the day. The technology that led to ""Now and then" were bellow embryonary, and they still managed to make such wonderful pieces, practically by hand. It´s incredible.
What about that video for "Free as a bird"... Still beyond everything to this day.

Re: Real Love (new 2024 mix)
Thanks everybody. I used the 5.1 Anthology version as my starting point so any mixing differences to the single are due to that. It would be too hard to remove John's demo from the stereo mix.
Just the pitch shift in audacity. The odd thing about that is that if you tick the "high quality" box it actually sounds lower quality. So don't tick it!
I had considered fixing that but it's due to John singing that word slightly different in the two vocals. To me it's classic John, like Slow Down or a lot of those other double tracked vocals. He never seemed to be bothered about replicating the first vocal perfectly.MarkRJones1970 wrote: ↑Wed Nov 08, 2023 1:54 pm This sounds really great but I think there's an error at 1:35:
"exactly where my life will g-go"?!
She's the one who sings "Boys"!
You know, i was thinking about all that and something funny occurred to me. There's this rumour that Yoko gave Paul a cassette tape of John's with "For Paul" written on it. But we know it couldn't have been the original N&T cassette because Weta had to get Sean Lennon to unearth it from John's archives. So did Yoko actually give Paul a cassette dub with all three songs on it?! If that's the case then it kind of explains the terrible quality they had to deal with in 1995. It also suggests the possibility that she wrote "for Paul" on the cassette so she wouldn't forget what it was for.georgefromhenley wrote: ↑Wed Nov 08, 2023 7:08 pm Ok - some "flanging artifacts" on Johns voice in parts - but i love the tone and tempo of the voice. Sounds more natural.
I wished Giles get a lower generation tape of those to work as you did...

Peter Jackson confirmed this in the last episode of the BBC Eras series:Lord Reith wrote: ↑Wed Nov 08, 2023 8:59 pm You know, i was thinking about all that and something funny occurred to me. “We assume that the copy of Now and Then that they were working to in the studio in 1995, where the vocals were coming from was probably not a first generation copy … you would imagine that the Lennon estate, Yoko would keep the first generation one in their archive and they'd make a copy. And so we thought, well, we're at least a generation down. Then our sound engineer Emile [de la Rey] said, “Well, no, there's also been a lot of noise correction and hum removal been added to this.” So we thought, well, that wasn't added to the original track that John recorded. So there's been another one done, where they've tried to clean up John's voice as much as they can, and then they've handed a copy of that to the three guys. So we thought, well, this is probably a third generation. And so we contacted Sean Lennon who was very helpful, and sure enough, we got a digital copy of the original. This is the same same demo, same performance, but it's just two generations better. So we’ve cleaned that one up, and it was a lot more solid.”

Yeah I did get the feeling that they had a much better copy to work with than we've heard.stereohysteria wrote: ↑Wed Nov 08, 2023 9:19 pm Peter Jackson confirmed this in the last episode of the BBC Eras series:

Was Emile the guy with the long hair seen at the mixing desk in the making-of video? He's a pretty cool dude.

Exactly. In the making off video i heard a slight hum on the Now and then demo - that we dont hear on our bootlegs (sourced from the Lost Lennon tapes?) - so i was wondering what this could have been - strange it was an original dub...

Re: Real Love (new 2024 mix)
There’s NO WAY John would have written ‘For Paul’ on the tape. He didn’t know some nobody scumbag was going to kill him. Makes much more sense that Yoko wrote it on the cassette her minions had dubbed copies of the tracks on to.
And thanks for the explanation about the dodgy “g-go”. After writing it that thought did occur to me. Sterling job though, did a side by side comparison and the difference is quite startling!

Re: Real Love (new 2024 mix)
I can't wait to listen to a NEURonal assisted version of "Real Love".
By the way, did you hear (but this has been removed from youtube) this extended remix of "Now And Then" which includes the "I Don't Wanna Loose You" part ?
About the story, John could have been proud of a batch of demos and could have sent a K7 to Paul or write "for Paul" on it; but I doubt that John used to send his late Dakota demos to Paul (even if John used to buy Paul or the Wings albums; I like John's comment about McCartney II). One of the main reason is that it was a dark song about fear of loss probably about Yoko.
On the other hand some demos have John introducing a song by "This one is probably for Ringo"; or "this one is for Mister Richard Starkey" : "Life Begins At 40" and Nobody Told Me". But Yoko released Milk & Honey in 1983; and Ringo was devastated by John's death.
I think that it's probably after John's death, Yoko did not know what to do with some tapes; was so affected that she could hear a tape where obviously the song was about a tormented relationship and these tapes were given to Paul.
