On Sunday 19th July 1964 the Beatles made their third of four appearances on Mike & Bernie Winters’ weekly ITV variety series ‘Big Night Out’ (which also encompassed their summer seaside-location series ‘Blackpool Night Out’). The Beatles' previous two appearances saw them simply miming to the records, but this 1964 set was the first time they played and sang live. The show was broadcast live from Blackpool’s ABC TV Theatre and video of this show is thought lost, but an audio recording of the closing 12-minute set survives. Unlike the technically superior 1965 performance the sound on the 1964 live telecast suffers from occasional overload distortion, guitars drifting out of tune, fluctuating volume levels, and, at times, inaudible drums. I’ve restored the sound balance as best as I could, while remixing this punchy, high-energy performance into stereo for a fuller, more palpable experience.
