While listening to Lord Reith's recent excellent Fabracadabra v9, I was most curious in how this mix of I Am The Walrus would stack against the mono original. I enjoyed hearing the cleanliness of the vocals and the orchestra, but I thought the song was still missing some of the roughness that makes the mono version such a compelling listen. When I a/b'd the new LR stereo mix with the mono EP version, I realized that not only was the mono louder but also there was a layer of distortion that really showed itself during the introduction and string bridges. Additionally, the extra bit of the backing track that seeps through on the stereo mix was still there and while it's a nice bass lick by McCartney, I can see why it was mixed out of the final mono version.
So trying to remain relatively conservative, I tried to take Lord Reith's excellent work and bring it more to how it might sound if they were trying to accomplish the old 60s tricks with modern tools. I have not mucked (much) with the stereo image, but have managed to remove the bass and drums when necessary and give a high-end sparkle that brings it (imo) much more in line with the original mix. But again, without LR's work, this wouldn't have been possible at all, so thanks!
I hope you all enjoy it, and any criticism is welcome.
