Trade groups - what are they and how do they work?

Post by Patrick Healy »

Following the recent Hammersmith controversy I noticed that the boot from which it came (Rarities 1962-67, BA Productions) says 'this is an exclusive DVD for the 21 members of the group Tomorrow Never Knows.'
It made me think...
Is there a standardised or 'traditional' process for entry into these trade groups?
To be clear I'm not currently interested in joining them, I just would appreciate any insight into how to do so and how they work, out of curiosity.

What I meant was, I find it confusing how you need to kind of get a way in. Once you have a certain unbootlegged film of course you can trade from there, but I gather you need a way in and I have not seen any standardised way to do it. I was interested if anyone could provide insight into that.

I haven't been involved in it for years and years - I'm going so far back that streaming and downloads weren't a thing yet, and things may be different now. But when I was into Bruce Springsteen boots and live shows, if you didn't have anything to trade many people who had shows would be willing to accept blanks and postage. That's blank recordable CDs, and you'd usually send them a few extra blanks. So, for example, if someone had a 3-disc show, he might be willing to burn a copy for you for, say 5 blanks and return postage.

Cop: Go home, then, and see him on the telly!
