It's funny how you can listen to a song for decades and not know what it's about until you hear it a million times while mixing it. I do believe the song is saying "Free as a bird, yeah it's the next best thing... to being home and dry". Meaning "I went out on a bender, but it's better to be home and sober". Mistaking "being" for "be" and the repeating of "free as a bird" back to back (free as a bird it's the next best thing to being free as a bird) instead of going straight into the "home home and dry" are what threw me off all this time. I like this song even more now that I understand it better.

I made a bunch of variations, I may get more up later. I hope you enjoy these!

I agree with Tex, please work on the balance between vocals and instruments. For my copies I chopped off the "little drummer boy"-sounding snare hits at the intro.
