The Yamaha DX7. Used well into the '90s too.

Oh I've heard of that. So that's the culprit.

Actually the wider problem was just that when a certain synth came out, everyone would use it. So you get hundreds of songs with the same synth string sound, same piano sound, same snare sound etc. The Beatles were much more selective, and only used new instruments sparingly. Clavioline ONCE, on Baby You're A Rich Man. Tubon ONCE, on It's All Too Much. Mellotron they were careful to use subtely, and Moog they only used on one album (one hopes they would have resisted the temptation to use it again if there'd been a followup). And they avoided anything too cheesy, like the sitar-guitar that you hear on so many records from the late sixties. They showed remarkably good taste in avoiding nearly all the pitfalls that surrounded them.

They actually did use the Clavioline one other time too. The final ending note of A Day In the Life has John(?) playing a single note on it together with George Martin playing different notes on a harmonium.
