How Paul McCartney Anonymously Returned to Liverpool in 1968 to Celebrate Christmas
It is well known that Paul McCartney was the Beatle who had the strongest connection to his hometown of Liverpool and the family members who still lived there. Even now, Paul can still be found regularly in Liverpool, for example when it comes to meetings at LIPA: the Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts, to which he has been associated for years. But also during his years as a Beatle, Paul often managed to find his way back to the place where his roots were. For example, in December 1968, to spend the holidays with his family with his brand new fiancée. We turn back the clock to December 1968...
New York and PortugalIn the autumn of 1968, Paul's relationship with the American photographer Linda Eastman takes shape. After visits back and forth, between London and New York and even to Paul's farm in Scotland, the couple seeks out the sun in Portugal in December. Together with Linda's young daughter Heather. There, Paul asks Linda to marry him. Then there is a family visit to Liverpool, to celebrate Christmas with the McCartney family. Rembrandt
Paul's father Jim McCartney has since moved to a more comfortable home on Baskeryville Road, in chic Heswall, on the other side of the Mersey. He lives there with his new wife Angie and stepdaughter Ruth. Paul bought the house for his father in 1964, after the successful American adventures of The Beatles. Jim and his family's new home, called 'Rembrandt', is a place where Paul and his own young family can visit a little more anonymously, far outside the centre of Liverpool, far out of sight of the press. And that is exactly what he does during the Christmas season of 1968.
Christmas at Auntie Jin
It's time to relax, now that The Beatles' White Album has been released at the end of November. And while John and George are making the press with their solo releases (Two Virgins, Wonderwall Music) and at the offices of Applea crazy Christmas reception takes place, Paul leaves for the north, to meet his father, uncles and aunts at Christmas dinner. The festivities take place in the McCartney family's largest house, the place where all the parties always take place: at Auntie Jin and Uncle Harry, at 147 Dinas Lane. That is also where Paul came a few years earlierCelebrates 21st birthday, which degenerates into chaos by John Lennon. But this Christmas everything is different. The family meets at the Christmas dinner, there are conversations and, according to family tradition, there is singing together.
A photo as proof
That singing also takes place on the street those days, when Liverpudlian Neil Harrison (no relation) walks through Heswall with a group of friends. They go from door to door to perform traditional Christmas carols. When they knock on 'Rembrandt's' door, Paul steps outside with a guitar around his neck. After singing some Christmas carols, Paul asks if the singers want to come in to warm up. There the party continues, with songs from the recently released Beatles album: Rocky Raccoon and Mother Nature's Son. Paul even teaches Neil how to play Blackbird. The approachable McCartney, who prefers to be among 'his' people... I think it's beautiful. Neil Harrison was not believed for long when he told about his adventures with Paul. Until the beautiful photo that Linda took popped up.
