Orchestral backings

Post by BigJoe »

I know some of the George Martin arrangements have been released on the SDE bonus discs but is there a complete collection of all the isolated orchestral/brass/string quartet/etc used on Beatles tracks (or even a list of such things)?

Interesting question. I've not heard of a compilation but I think you could probably get a list together. There are only five SDEs to look through, and the Anthology. In addition there are all the Rock Band multis, so any orchestration from Abbey Road, for example, can be isolated and probably has been at some point.Just a case of researching it I guess.

Off the top of my head, orchestra unless marked. I haven’t included tracks with e.g. a single instrument, such as French horn on For No One. I’m sure I’ve missed a few.

Yesterday (string quartet)
Eleanor Rigby (doubled quartet - Anthology)
Strawberry Fields Forever (Sgt Pepper SDE)
A Day In The Life (Sgt Pepper SDE)
She's Leaving Home (small ensemble, Sgt Pepper SDE)
Magical Mystery Tour
It's All Too Much
All You Need Is Love
I Am The Walrus
A beginning/Good Night (Anthology/white Album SDE)
Hey Jude
Martha My Dear (brass and strings)
Honey Pie (ensemble, White Album SDE)
Savoy Truffle (ensemble, White Album SDE)
Piggies (ensemble, White Album SDE)
Here Comes The Sun
Golden Slumbers/Carry That Weight (Abbey Road SDE)
The End
Something (Abbey Road SDE)
Here Comes The Sun
Across The Universe
The Long And Winding Road

I love GM's score to Walrus. It is basically lost in the mix, but when you hear it isolated (especially in stereo) it is just phenomenal. A truly unique and avante garde piece of work.

I have a decent stereo upmix of the "Golden Slumbers" orchestral track (Rock Band stem). This was done automatically in beta software which I no longer can use. I'm sure a manual approach could do better. On the original stereo mix they simply ADT'd this to make fake stereo.

producing the Beatles podcast did an episode on the SFF orchestral backing including a re-creation. I found it very interesting.

Can someone grab the walrus orchestration? It's beyond my feeble attempts. Thanks.

The one I posted above? That is a download link. Not sure how it's appearing on your screen but on mine it's playable from this screen and there's a small square icon to the top right. Click that and you can download.
