A Collection of Beatles’ Oldies was the first non-album compilation released in the U.K. in 1966. Still, it had a few singles tracks which were also on albums. But there were several released before that in other countries, like in Sweden, Denmark and Germany. All official releases.

I think he means albums made up solely of non LP material. In that case, Hey Jude qualifies from a US perspective but not U.K. because of the AHDN tracks. Past Masters pulls together all of the non U.K. LP material (but does include a load of songs released on US albums).

The U.K. Rarities also filled the non LP remit at the time, although it’s been superseded by Past Masters.

I am assuming you are speaking only about UK and/or US releases? Or Apple only? If not, one of my earlier Beatles purchases was "The Beatles' Greatest" on Odeon from West Germany. I believe there was a couple of official VeeJay compilations as well.
