Vinyl Beatles and Solo Beatlegs, 1970-1989 wanted to complete collection

Post by ashwom1 »

My passion for collecting bootlegs started in 1987 when I was 16 years old, fired by the only reference book I had at that time, Neville Stannard’s The Long And Winding Road discography, published in 1982. Although it only had a small section on bootlegs in the appendix, it blew my mind. What were all these mysterious albums I’d never heard of, and where could I get to hear them? Older, more knowledgeable fans pointed me in the direction of local record fairs and over a few months I was able to build up quite a collection. Of course, these were all cassettes, I didn’t have the income to buy vinyl bootlegs at that point, but I didn’t mind, on many occasions the tape would have one album per side, so I’d have tapes containing the Budokan concert on side one, and the Have You Heard The Word album on side 2, a real mish-mash. I didn’t know it but my collecting co-incided with what is now considered to be the golden age of bootleg vinyl albums such as Not For Sale, Nothing Is Real, Get Back (on the Tonto label), Dig It!, The Real Case Has Just Begun, Sessions, and perhaps the finest set of all, the original Beatles At The Beeb series on the Transcription Records label, all with fantastic artwork. Turns out I’d just missed the era of bootlegs with pasted on poorly photocopied images and handwritten tracklistings!

Two books came out either side of Lewisohn’s Recording Sessions that proved absolutely indispensable in organising my collection, Do You Want To Know A Secret and Fixing A Hole, both by L.R.E. King. The first volume in particular was one of my favourite Beatle books for a long time, so much so that it eventually fell apart (obviously it was made using the same glue that bound the original Get Back book).

I determined to collect every bootleg in those two books but never managed it because, like everyone else my collecting moved on to CD’s with the advent of Ultra Rare Trax, Vigotone and Yellow Dog, and then later still to simply downloading everything I could get my hands on. If I burned everything on my hard drive to CD-R the number of discs would run into the thousands. These days it’s almost too easy, not that I’m complaining.

But recently I’ve been feeling very nostalgic after several of those classic old bootlegs have appeared on this site, either ripped from the records, or in reconstructed approximations using better quality tapes. I've recently purchased 'Not For Sale' and 'Nothing Is Real' on vinyl (at last!), and I’ve spent far too much time diving deep into the beatleg.online site (and elsewhere) and kicking myself for not buying John C. Winn’s books on beatlegs when I had the chance (and when you could actually afford to buy books from the States) and it’s got to the point now where I’m wondering can a 52 year old man complete the collection he dreamed of owning when he was 17?

These are the vinyl bootlegs, compiled from the books Do You Want To Know A Secret, Fixing A Hole (both by LRE King) and the Beatleg.online site. that would complete my collection. If anyone can post rips of these albums, in any format - FLAC, mp3, indexed, not indexed – I’ll take them however they come and be grateful. But please, no recent remakes, I want them in their original (bad) quality, with all the quirky interviews from obscure 70s tv and radio, outfakes and tracks that aren’t even by the Beatles intact.

Thank you in advance to anyone who can help. Hopefully this post may trigger a few happy memories for someone else too.

Here is Classified Document 2: hxxps://we.tl/t-pFwYI8YRsT
And Buried Treasure: hxxps://we.tl/t-fbRKYXhReg
Lifting Material From The World: hxxps://we.tl/t-r3eLAawhHE
Nothing Is Real: hxxps://we.tl/t-ehHiOsii4V
Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da: hxxps://we.tl/t-WO0amkhJdn
Plop Plop, Fizz Fizz: hxxps://we.tl/t-m5HITF2d1P

That's me finished. I'd be interested in any of the others. Good luck with those Melvins, though. "When It Says Beatles..." is the rarest and most expensive Beatles bootleg ever made. 50 copies. One sold for over $4950 a few years back.

I, too, long for the old vinyl Telecasts LP by John & Yoko. A friend (now deceased) gave me a reel-to-reel copy of his record decades ago. Much later, I handed the tape to a guy to digitize. He promptly vanished. Left town with a lot of people's stuff in tow. Sure would love to get another copy! As you said, it's nostalgia.

Nothing wrong with a bit of nostalgia if it reminds you of a happy time in your life :)

As a fellow 52-year-old whose copy of Do You Want To Know A Secret also fell apart by 1990, I'll be glad to share what I have from your list.

They are quick listening copies done for the purpose of writing the Beatlegmania books, so don't have track indexing or click removal, but that will only add to the authenticity of the experience.
