I transferred some files which contained some Bootlegzone release pages but then again this question could apply to any file with super long name.
Anybody have a solution as I've had to copy it's name to a txt file then shorten the name to transfer it over but once it's transferred I can't use that name so I've had to shorten it.

Files with long names won't go usb hdd > usb hdd
Re: Files with long names won't go usb hdd > usb hdd
How deep is the folder you're trying to transfer the files to in the file structure? Try transferring the files higher up in the hard drive. I've had to put folders side-by-side before instead of saving to a master folder. Like instead of putting volumes 1 through X in a folder I've had to just put folders (or files) separate higher up. Sorry if my suggestion misses the mark and is not what you need. But over the years I've found that I've lots of times needed to rename to shorten file names or bring them up higher in the drive.

It's a windows limitation. You can enable long file name support by doing a registry change.

George,
The Six pack 10 part series,
Part, eg vol 6, the release, 1 would have x 3 folders cd /pics/bz pages, the bz page name was fine but not the _files (which make the page display properly) it didn't like.
The structure was beatles > six pack series > each week > 6 releases.

Open the folder and highlight all the files you want to modify the name of, then either use "remove last n" to remove a specified number of characters at the end of the filenames, or "replace" to replace some of the filename text with nothing.
Should take no more than a minute to do it all.

I had a similar problem at work, one solution was to create a fictious drive.
v:/ = c:/ beatles / bzshares / albums /
You use three characters (v:/) instead of the number of similar characters used in the path (c:/ beatles / bzshares / albums /) .... The gain depends on the number of similar characters ...

The only problem is if it's a web page html file then you also have to shorten the name of the associated folder, or the page will not display properly.

Yeah you'd have to open every html file in a text editor and search & replace the folder name.Lord Reith wrote: ↑Tue Mar 07, 2023 8:36 pm The only problem is if it's a web page html file then you also have to shorten the name of the associated folder, or the page will not display properly.
It'd be quicker to open each page in your browser and resave with a new shorter name.
