Paul with only three strings on his cheap Rosetti. John needing a hammer (?!) to switch his amp on.

Rough days.

Another interesting quote I found in The Beatles 1963 amongst the reminiscences: according to one musician who spoke to John in the early days, John bought his Rickenbacker guitar from a GI in Hamburg.

I might be mistaken but I believe that Gibson amp still exists somewhere

Good morning .
A contribution to this article. At the annual Casbah Club party in West Derby on August 25, 2018, I had a long talk with Chas Newby. He told me about that performance in great detail and when I asked him if he remembered the song that Paul sang after Bob Wooler's introduction, he answered me very sure:
"Oh Yeah! Little Richard`s Long Tall Sally."
At no point did he mention "Ooh, my soul."
Cheers

"Stu was wearing jacket "....Stuart did NOT return from Hamburg, therefore he was NOT in that performance...
Evidently the author of the note confuses memories and mixes performances...

Did they play Litherland twice? The guy says they didn't play with The Beatles "the first week" so maybe he is thinking of a different venue altogether.

Re Ooh My Soul, the guy from the Merseybeats says that they opened their first Casbah gig after Hamburg with that song, so they must have known it. And I can't remember where it is but there is a video interview where one guy is insisting that it was Ooh My Soul and not Long Tall Sally that opened the Litherland show and that he'd been arguing about it with his friend. Bob Wooler also said it was Long Tall Sally and he had a very good memory. But in truth both songs are nearly identical so who knows. Of course it's also perfectly possible that they played both songs at the start of different sets.

I also have an audio interview where Bob Wooler is revisting Litherland in the early 80s and recalling the performance. I'm not allowed to post it but I will listen again and see what he says.
