Maybe I'm not alone in this, but I have a particular OCD with dates (especially previously unheard outtakes!) and I'd like to start a discussion about what the general consensus might be with regards to dating these outtakes. Some might be easier than others, given Lewisohn's work (and others).
DISC TWO- OUTTAKES PART 1
1-TOMORROW NEVER KNOWS (TAKE 1) 03:29 –PARTIALLY NEW
I believe this is already established as April 6th, 1966?
2-TOMORROW NEVER KNOWS (MONO MIX RM 11) 03:02 –PARTIALLY NEW
Since it's a mono remix, this would be June 6th, 1966
3-GOT TO GET YOU INTO MY LIFE (FIRST VERSION / TAKE 5) 04:08 –PARTIALLY NEW
Given it's take 5, then this is April 7th, 1966. By the way, am I the only one who noticed that the stabbing guitar chords in the second half of each verse is pretty much identical to the stabbing guitar chords in "Getting Better"? (did Macca recycle that for Pepper?)
4-GOT TO GET YOU INTO MY LIFE (SECOND VERSION / UNNUMBERED MIX) 02:33 –NEW
The fact that they call this an unnumbered mix (plus the overdubs give it away - this is not the basic track), then it suggests that it's April 11th, 1966, since Lewisohn says guitars were overdubbed on April 11th, 1966
5-GOT TO GET YOU INTO MY LIFE (SECOND VERSION / TAKE 8) 02:40 - PARTIALLY NEW
The horns were recorded on May 18th, 1966 onto take 8 per Lewisohn (which makes this, what? 'Take 8, track 2' as they said in the days of "Please Please Me"?). A new vocal was recorded later, but if this is take 8, this is May 18th, 1966.
6-LOVE YOU TO (TAKE 1) 02:38 -NEW
Take one was April 11th, 1966.
7-LOVE YOU TO (UNNUMBERED REHEARSAL) 01:33 -NEW
All the basic tracks were recorded on April 11th, 1966, so if George and Paul are running through the song, it would make sense that it happened on that day between takes. (Overdubs were done on April, 13th, 1966).
8-LOVE YOU TO (TAKE 7) 02:53 -NEW
Take 7 belongs on April 11th, 1966.
9-PAPERBACK WRITER (TAKES 1 & 2 / BACKING TRACK) 03:35 - PARTIALLY NEW
April 13th, 1966 basic track recordings (Vocal overdubs done on April 14th, 1966.
10-RAIN (TAKE 5 / ACTUAL SPEED) 02:35 -NEW
Per Lewisohn, this is April 14th, 1966. As was mentioned on other threads, the bass was added on the next day (so Paul doesn't play his part THAT fast - but Ringo does!!)
11-RAIN (TAKE 5 / SLOWED DOWN FOR MASTER TAPE) 03:11 -NEW
I believe this should be dated as April 14th as well.
12-DOCTOR ROBERT (TAKE 7) 02:57 -NEW
Both Mark Lewisohn and beatlesbible indicate that the basic track was recorded on April 17th, 1966 and overdubs for vocals took place on April 19th, 1966. So, 04/19/1966 it is.
13-AND YOUR BIRD CAN SING (FIRST VERSION / TAKE 2) 02:12 – PARTIALLY NEW
April 20th, 1966.
14-AND YOUR BIRD CAN SING (FIRST VERSION / TAKE 2 / GIGGLING) 02:21 - PARTIALLY NEW
April 20th, 1966.
DISC 3- OUTTAKES PART 2
1-AND YOUR BIRD CAN SING (SECOND VERSION / TAKE 5)02:18 –NEW
April 26th, 1966.
2-TAXMAN (TAKE 11)02:35 -PARTIALLY NEW
April, 21st, 1966
3-I’M ONLY SLEEPING (REHEARSAL FRAGMENT)00:46 -PARTIALLY NEW
April 27th, 1966 (assuming the rehearsal took place the same day as they started recording it)
4-I’M ONLY SLEEPING (TAKE 2)02:26 - PARTIALLY NEW
April 27th, 1966
5-I’M ONLY SLEEPING (TAKE 5)02:41 -NEW
April 27th, 1966
6-I’M ONLY SLEEPING (MONO MIX RM1)03:04 -NEW
RM1 puts this on May 6th, 1966.
7-ELEANOR RIGBY (SPEECH BEFORE TAKE 2)02:10 - PARTIALLY NEW
April 28th, 1966
8-ELEANOR RIGBY (TAKE 2)02:17 -NEW
April 28th, 1966
9-FOR NO ONE (TAKE 10 / BACKING TRACK)02:21 -NEW
May 9th, 1966
10-YELLOW SUBMARINE (SONGWRITING WORK TAPE / PART 1)01:01 -NEW
This is really a John Lennon home demo which makes this challenging to date. I'd be inclined to date this around anywhere from late January to early March of 1966 when they didn't have much on their calendar (which freed up John to tell a journalist that the Beatles were more popular than Jesus).
Thoughts?
11-YELLOW SUBMARINE (SONGWRITING WORK TAPE / PART 2)04:39 -NEW
Call it a fan's faith in their superhuman songwriting abilities: I'll assume this was on the same day as take one. May, 26th, 1966.
12-YELLOW SUBMARINE (TAKE 4 BEFORE SOUND EFFECTS)02:35 –NEW
May 26th, 1966
13-YELLOW SUBMARINE (HIGHLIGHTED SOUND EFFECTS)03:00 –PARTIALLY NEW
June 1st, 1966
14-I WANT TO TELL YOU (SPEECH & TAKE 4)01:21 –NEW
June 2nd, 1966
15-HERE, THERE AND EVERYWHERE (TAKE 6)02:27 -PARTIALLY NEW
June 14th, 1966?
16-SHE SAID SHE SAID (JOHN'S DEMO)01:08
I'm gonna say this Lennon Demo dates from the same period as the Yellow Submarine songwriting work tape. Mid January through early March of 1966.
17- SHE SAID SHE SAID (TAKE 15 / BACKING TRACK REHEARSAL)03:22 -NEW
June 21st, 1966 (did Paul really walk out of this one?)
Any thoughts/corrections appreciated!
