A Silly Quest from a NOB Or the tt xx question

Hi all linkposters

A question to whom might know. When a link is posted one is assumed to replace xx with tt so far I think I got it.

What I wonder is sometimes I just click an are able to open link in a new window/page whatever which I prefer but sometimes I have to use BOTH hands and copy the link and then replace the XX with tt.

So my question is what decides what the outcome is. The link looks the same. How can I determine just looking at the link if I have just to right click or have to go all the way and copy the link befor the exchange of letters.

Thanks for reading the question.

Regards

In my browser (Edge), I hover the cursor over the link, and then it displays the URL (with xx or tt).

Thanks a lot for Your input.

Thats a way to see what I will have to do.

Now that being partly solved remains this....

..................... What decide what outcome of the link and can I decide somehow what letter to be instead of the two xx?

I highlight the URL except the 'Http://'

It depends on the link

Exactly it d e p e n d s on the link!

Exactly what is it depending on? what determs the link to be opened in a new tab or need to be copied AND opened+

I must to admit its getting better all the time..Think we are getting there....

hxxps://we.tl/abc123
hxxps://we.tl/abc123

So are you saying what's the difference between these two urls above, and why is one a link but the other isn't?

The answer seems to be whether the user puts the xx in themselves, or lets the site do it. The first url I typed out 'hxxtps', while the second one I typed 'https' and let the site obfuscate it.

At the risk of confusing things more, the http -> hxxp from an automatic standpoint is dependent upon the rules setup on the server. A site has to be specifically listed, since there are some de-referrer links that are okay to use 'as-is'. I do frequent scans of URLs to make sure that the conversion rules are current for those sites that need them.

AND...if someone adds the 'hxxp' themselves, sometimes the board identifies that it should have been a URL, and creates a URL automatically based on just the website.com address.

For example:

hxxp://www.beatlesdb.com

In these cases, I usually edit the xx back to tt and then the server will convert it appropriately.
