Lord Reith, many thanks for such a thorough and interesting reply to my questions and for taking the time to provide step by step instructions, with software advice. It is appreciated.

I just noticed, they don't have a Mac version, that I can find?

Lord Reith wrote: Thu Jan 06, 2022 4:57 am You can find a lot of subtitles for free online. I once bought an Italian movie with no subtitles, but was able to find English subs online and you simply put the srt file in the same location as the mkv and they show on screen.
Yeah, I should have been less vague. I was meaning more for the bootleg material that probably doesn't already have subtitles that exist out in the wild.

Also, the thing I like about mkv over mp4 for subtitles is that while you can use the srt file, you can also imbed them directly into the file, so there's no need to drag a separate file along with you when you move your file.

I have installed NCH Prism which has been able to convert the older files to .mkv format. I haven't used the programme before so I guess it should be able to merge the separate files also.

After messing about for two days, trying out several programmes, I discovered that if you open a VIDEO_TS folder in the Media Library of VLC Player, it plays perfectly with all parts sequenced.

and our good friend beatlefan99 also hinted at this last week.......

D/L VLC Player got 'Open Folder' in drop down menu top LHS
Open the 'VIDEO_TS' you have D/L and it should play fine with Menu's and Audio

No transitor radio? Lord, I can relate to the first 3 but not the "shitty windows laptop". My first computer was a second hand Apple II+. Later I upgraded with a new Apple IIe. Windows machines thereafter. Never ever had a laptop.
