The 2 channels of the flacs are different. Their average (as shown by spek) is very similiar to the mono mp3 I guess.

Is it considered opinion that these are just bloated mp3 then?

Yep, sorry I misunderstood your question. There's a Unicorn set Get Back Camera B Rolls that is the Apple days. The 12 Days at Twickenham set is in fact, the Twickenham B Rolls (go figure). I don't know which is a better source. Sorry.
