Correct. I assume that modern formulations are more stable, but I haven't bought any tapes stock, of any kind, for about 15 years.
Geoff Emerick tape
Re: Geoff Emerick tape
I had a reel which started to generate this white stuff all of a sudden. Turned out, my stack of reels was in the vicinity of a window, and even if the window was opened for just a little in the cold season, it was enough for that partucular reel (but not others) to feel unwell.paul62 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 30, 2021 5:32 am I have an Ampex Grand Master I cassette and soon after I'd bought it, I'd taped an LP ("Their Satanic Majesties Request", as it turns out) and it started to shed a lot of white stuff each time I played the cassette. Freaky to see. The actual cassette mechanism was smooth.
Re: Geoff Emerick tape
That is a different problem, not Sticky Shed. The white residue is a waxy acid from an unstable formulation. You'll find BASF and some Scotch often develop this. I've rectified this by running the tape through a lint free cloth held lightly between the fingers. That removes the residue. I then use a tiny amount of silicone based oil on a cloth and run the tape through that once more will usually get the tape to play successfully.zaval80 wrote: ↑Tue Nov 30, 2021 2:00 pm I had a reel which started to generate this white stuff all of a sudden. Besame Mucho and Love Me Do were on acetates, I believe.Bazilnerk wrote: ↑Mon Nov 29, 2021 2:30 pm Don't know why the Decca tape was baked, unless it was a 70's dupe. 1960's tape does NOT need baking!
You'd think Emerick might have mentioned he had the tape during Anthology considering that they used a couple of tracks from George Martin's acetates.
Wonder where Besame Mucho came from then. We know that a tape copy of the song was found and EMI had it by the time they made Sessions. Perhaps that came via Emerick all along.
BM was around, while LMD was found in the back of a cupboard in George Martin's house while they were putting Anthology together. Completely forgotten, supposedly.

Maybe it was just a ruse though to protect Geoff? He could just have dubbed it off onto a reel and sent it anonymously to EMI.

If take 4 of Love Me Do was the "best", can you imagine how bad the other take was?!
