The Beatles In Mono (Part 1)

Seems like a good idea, so I opened a couple of these tracks out of curiosity.
I'll Be Back from the mono box you say is "HEAVILY declipped", yet there is no clipping on the mono box. I see some slight EQ and level differences (yours is louder oddly, since declipping usually requires a reduction in volume), but after matching levels, I'm having a hard time hearing any difference.

A Hard Day's Night (title track), yours is at 48k sampling rate (I'll Be Back was as 44.1k), but doesn't have the fidelity even up to 22kHz the mono box has. Maybe because of the matching filter. Yes, I can see slight differences in EQ, but I'm really straining to hear a difference to the Mono Box, and yours fades out sooner.

I know releases of the Beatles on CD are never perfect, but I've always thought the mono box was one of the better ones. I'm struggling to find any noticeable differences here. Maybe you could point out some standout tracks.

Okay, checking one more. I will say that Things We Said Today from Something New has a much more natural EQ than the Capitol Albums CD Box (it's slight, but admittedly better). But it's also bloated to 48k where the source is 44.1. I don't have a great rip of that vinyl, so I trust the RMW rip is a good reference.

It's getting late, but I can't resist checking one more. Misery, from PPM. Yours is 48k again, where the source is 44.1. Interestingly, the wind noise on the opening "The world..." is more noticeable in yours (and the CD EP source) than the Mono Box (which kicks in a high-pass filter to cut everything below about 50 Hz until just after that). EQ difference from yours to the Mono Box is too slight to notice. The source for yours (Beatles No. 1 EP CD) has noise reduction applied, and hence fades quicker. Not sure which I'd pick here, Mono Box with the wind-noise reduction, or the EP CD with noise reduction.

Hi MJ. Appreciate the feedback; I'll be honest, I have thought that the mono box sounded murky before and one of my goals was to apply the EQ from some trusted sources and cuts (and check to see if some of the reviews around the US Boxes, that even though they were from the 2009 sources they sounded less congested, was correct). I think With The Beatles did benefit from this somewhat, although I admit I also struggle to see how much of this is just me wanting it to be an improvement.

RMW's Something New release is interesting. Lo-fi when you first hear it, but if you sort of split the difference between the EQ of that rip and the raw Capitol Albums CD, you do end up with something pretty nice sounding. I do think some of the US albums have improved with this process.

Well, i still think it's a good idea, and I certainly didn't hear anything bad on your set. I'll check out some more of the US albums tracks. Making everything 44.1 is probably a good idea, since that's what it started as.

I was reminded that the EP box had noise reduction applied (I think maybe LR mentioned this before). I wonder if the 87 CDs might be better in some instances, since you're EQing them anyway. Just a thought.

And what an eye-opener that even my favorite of all the CD sets, the Mono Box had been futzed with.
