His piano was out of tune; in 1995, they used capo's on their guitars to 'detune' their guitars (see the photo's), but in 2023 they didn't need them anymore. I suppose they used AI to change the pitch of John's voice, and may have introduced some 'autotune' in that process.
I think they originally intended to give it the same treatment as Real Love…by speeding up the demo in an effort to brighten it up…hence the capos

I thought that too until I read the "Sound and vision" article that was shared in this topic, it says the original demo was somewhere between Am and B flat minor.

Pitch correction, he notes, was also made worse by the fact that John’s piano was slightly out of tune. [He determined, later, that “Now and Then” was actually in A minor, though the tape played it in between B flat minor and A minor,

So it might have been why they have capos, without really speeding it up (or just very slightly to get to B flat minor).

Yes, when I did my version of N&T I remember playing the piano part in A Minor.

However the type of piano John is playing is what I call an "old banger", and they are very often tuned sown a semitone, so it's altogether possible it's meant to be in Abm. Come to think of it his voice does sound a little weedy.

Autotune is the Botox of the audio world. If you're not looking closely it can give the fleeting illusion of perfection, but as soon as you scrutinize it in any detail the stiffness becomes apparent. The same as Botoxed faces give me an uncanny valley feeling, so do Autotuned voices. I actually prefer the flat-out massively autotuned vocals on today's stuff to the mildy autotuned vocals of people like Adele. Because at least the former is obviously fake, but the latter attempts to pull the wool over people's eyes.

Not sure if anyone else has heard this yet, but the song apparently features in the recent movie "Argylle". I haven't seen it yet, so I can't say what they use of the Beatles version (which I think might be in there as well), but here's the orchestral version from the soundtrack.

Here's an article on it: https://www.kshe95.com/real-rock-news/h ... n-argylle/
