When did John begin using his granny specs?
When I was looking at the pictures from November 1966 with John playing a lavatory attendant in Not Only But Also, it occured to me that this was the first time I can think of him wearing those glasses in public. Did he do it as a joke, then see himself on tv and realise it looked okay?

How I Won the War filmed from September 19 to November 6, 1966. If they were a character affectation for Private Gripweed, they certainly carried over after that.
Re: When did John begin using his granny specs?
Most sources agree that he started wearing them during the filming of "How I Won The War" as Private Gripweed.
During the filming he was able to see clearly, while also growing accustomed to wearing them publicly,
so his insecurity about being seen in glasses was quickly outweighed by his renewed vision.
They quickly became his new look.

Crikey! That was 1965!
I'd forgotten about How I Won The War, but that's no doubt the right answer. So at least two good things came out of that dreadful film: Strawberry Fields Forever and the granny glasses!

from what I remember since John Lennon was myope is that he should have wear some glasses before. But the first photos I have seen were during How I Won The War (before it does not look like "corrected" glasses; just sunglasses);Lord Reith wrote: ↑Sun Jan 21, 2024 9:11 pmCrikey! That was 1965!

in the movie the model of the glasses is the "basic" one from the UK "health-care" I think - or provided by the army; hence this particular model.
I remember several great photos from How I Won The War set. One with John Lennon phographied with an eyefish optical effect. Can't find it but it was on a very nice photo blog.

Besides the joke 'Help' sequence in 1965, I think 6 September 1966 was the first time he was seen wearing them in public.
