Band on the run demo tapes

Post by beatlepaul »

We've all heard the story how Paul and Linda got mugged in Lagos, he says they took the demo tapes but luckily he could remember the songs to re record them.
Have these demos ever surfaced on bootleg?

No. And it was always assumed that Paul did not have the demos anymore. Certainly not in Africa but he could still have another copy at home.

He'd probably take copies not originals because demos are usually for the purpose of teaching the other musicians and the producer the songs.

Pretty funny that his muggers didn't realise they'd actually made off with something really valuable. They probably chucked them in a bin.

From the McCartney Legacy book:
For reference, Paul had brought along cassette copies of the demos the full band had made at Low Ranachan, and they consulted them when necessary. But mostly, Paul had the arrangements in his head.

---

“Give us the bags,” one of the muggers said, and they handed over their carrying bags, with Linda’s camera and film, Paul’s cassette player, and copies of the Low Ranachan demo tapes.*

*Although Paul and Linda mentioned the mugging in interviews shortly after their return to London, the detail of the demos being stolen was not mentioned until the 1980s. In various versions, Paul noted that the loss of the demos meant that he had to reconstruct the songs from memory at the sessions. But, in fact, ‘Picasso’s Last Words’ was the last song recorded in Lagos. The four-track master of the demo remained in London or Campbeltown, and could be consulted, if necessary, before the continuation of the sessions at AIR.

McCartney Legacy states the mugging took place "That evening" - when they recorded Drink To Me (Picasso's Last Words) - p625. If that was the last song recorded, it can't be true they had to record tha album from memory. They's just finished in Lagos when the demo tapes were taken and they brought studio tapes back with them to finish up at AIR.

Was this the work of a resentful Fela Kuti?(see Band On The Run's Poloroid Snapshots poster)
Or, was Fela visiting w/ Paul as an Ammbassadore of good will on behalf of locals/culture/DWP?
I read that over 1,000,000 tried to attend Fela's funeral!
Paul was in a very dangerous placer.
Henry McCullough/Denny Seiwell were smart to consider the their own fair complexions on a professonal level.
Paul's Kwanza jersey probably didn't help! Which way to Kentucky Fried Chicken!
