Beach Boys - Good Vibrations (2021 Stereo Mix)
Beach Boys - Good Vibrations (2021 Stereo Mix)
So I learned yesterday that apparently the Beach Boys are releasing an expanded version of their Sounds of Summer album with some new remixes. Good Vibrations is one of them and they've released it early. To me it sounds really good! And from what I understand, the original masters were lost, so the stereo mix was made with AI separation from the mono mix.

Maybe it's just me, but something sounds amiss at 2:13-14.

I hear a minor edit there, perhaps a punch-in or splice on the original that's made more obvious in the separation?thewarpedvinyljunkie wrote: ↑Thu May 19, 2022 2:38 pm Maybe it's just me, but something sounds amiss at 2:13-14.

So this is official spectral stereo? Shouldn't we all have a go then?

This has been done before: Lord Reith, Garrett, SteakWay, The Beach Boys Ultimate Smile and somebody on YouTube. Other sessions and mixes in stereo are available (ie, Smile Sessions/Cork In The Ocean Productions).

I really love that song and it's production. Been gathering all the sessions I can find, sorting them, and using them to expand the 'highlights' versions that were released and separating the takes, etc. Been a lot of fun!

Re: Beach Boys - Good Vibrations (2021 Stereo Mix)
the 2021 mix, the backing track is true stereo, as that always existed and didn't dissapear.
what's new here is how they've done the vocals.
They've always had to get them out of the mono mix,
separate the parts and put them on to the stereo backing track
now they've made it stereo vocal spread mixed back in with the stereo backing track.
in 2021 the technology has advanced far enough to do it very convincingly

Re: Beach Boys - Good Vibrations (2021 Stereo Mix)
I have done the same with several mixes that have been officially released (or will be soon). These are also where Stereo backing tracks survive but the vocals no longer exists separately. Whilst the vocal track may not be 100% 'Clean' as long as it is artefact free, it blends in well with the stereo track. Trick I find is to not remove 100% of the backing.
I'm not often convinced by "separations" but they work well with this technique.
One track I worked on recently, the vocal was only partially wiped - 1st 3rd of the song. The technique worked so well that you can't tell when the separated vocal ends and the original starts.

Beautifully trippy, jpgrcat! My favorite moment is 7:55, when the woodblocks come in.jpgrcat wrote: ↑Fri May 20, 2022 10:24 am In 2008, I made this.... 22 minutes long

I have often thought about doing the same with my favorite BB song ("Heroes & Villains"), but I realized that if it took Brian almost 50 years to decide how he really wanted it, it would probably take me at least that long, too.
