An SSD is not a good option for long-term storage.
Why is that? :o

Do a Google search, there is a bunch of info on the topic.

From hxxps://nordic-backup.com/blog/reliable-long-term-data-storage/ (FWIW):

"Why SSD instead of conventional hard drives? Conventional drives tend to wear out after about three years of use. SSDs don’t use conventional spinning “platters” to store data, so there are fewer moving parts. Under optimal conditions, an SSD can be used for ten years or more without any hardware issues. This makes SSD ideal for long term data storage."

I would be very uncomfortable storing stuff in the cloud. I've known a couple of people have their uploads deleted because someone discovered they were "illegal" files (in as far as good music is illegal). Also, online platforms seem to be getting more and more unpredictable. I'd hate to have everything stored in the cloud, then try to log on one day in ten years time and get one of those obscure "Oops! It looks like there's something suspicious about your behaviour! We just want to send you a text verification.." and you realise you don't have that phone number any more! If I had a penny for every old account I've lost the password for or has been subsumed into some larger company and obliterated, I'd have exactly five dollars and twenty-five cents!

Hang on... so you're saying it IS a good option?

Not necessarily, I just started looking around.

I saw another article talking about SSD sensitivities to voltage fluctuations, so I cannot say...

Another back-and-forth article by some young girl, it seems:

As with anything else, perhaps a mixture of storage options is the wisest path. That way surely at least ONE copy will be viable long-term!

I can only say that I have had...

- hard drives fail

- thumb drives fail

- those square SD cards fail

- laptops fail

- cdrs fail

- dvdrs fail

- real dvds fail

- tapes grow white mildew on top

- cassettes refuse to play anymore

In the end, it seems to me the only truly permanent storage medium is... vinyl.

The comments to this article I think are more informative than the article itself:
https://www.backblaze.com/blog/how-reliable-are-ssds/

in any case, I was made aware that I do not want SSDs for storage for years. HDDs are fine by me (cheaper, too).

P.S. This one
https://www.extremetech.com/computing/2 ... hout-power
is even more worrying.

In my experience I've had one pretty old SSD external fail (while another of the same make and vintage is currently in an old laptop and still works), and various HDDs go squirrely. I have a handful of Lacie 250 GB SSD externals with the orange rubber wrapper that have been fine for several years. They were originally purchased to reimage computers quickly but now I use them for non-critical data storage and access (mainly for speed). Still work fine.

In my January 2014 MacBook Air the SSD wear level is 70%, meaning it burned through 30% of its life so far – after all that time. I use it daily. I also have an M1 MacBook Pro and various iMacs and PCs to use so don't don't cry for me...

Flash drives! Don't use them for anything but giving somebody some non-critical files in person, watching a copy of a video file on TV or making bootable drives to install Linux or whatever. Don't store important stuff on them! That said, I work in higher ed and students' lost flash drives that I've had in a drawer for several years still work. Including one that belonged to Gwen Stefani's brother with pix of the family and Blake Shelton. How do you reach these people?

Data CDs and DVDs, pfffft. They're sometimes bad just after being burned. And slow to access! I have no patience with this media anymore and have converted every single one I used to have to HDD.

I have used Mac since 2012, prior to this I had a Mac Book Pro. They never fail.
