Instructions for tweaking the Japanese Disc 4

Post by Lord Reith »

Let me start by saying that the rogue Japanese disc 4 with the unadulterated 1969 Get Back is still very much an official release so cannot be uploaded here. But for those of you who have bought the set in question, powerPC has asked me to post this tutorial.

The Japanese D4 has a number of sonic advantages, namely no use of noise reduction and a more stable stereo image. On the other hand, it doesn't sound as crisp as the regular disc and has the peaks clipped more severely. This tutorial will fix that.

- open Audacity in 32 bit mode (default but check in the "quality" settings in preferences)

- import all the songs from the Jap cd and wait for them to parse

- highlight them all

- from EFFECTS, choose "high pass filter" and set the frequency to 20 and the rolloff to 48db then click OK and wait for it to finish

- download this zip file: https://tinyurl.com/expires-Nov-4

- in EFFECTS go to "Equalization" or "Graphic EQ" (depending on which version of Audacity you are using) then "save/manage curves" and choose "import"

- depending on which version of audacity you have, select either the XML (older vsn) or TXT (newer vsn) file you just downloaded "1970 eq" and "open"

- still in the "manage curves" window, scroll down the list of curves and highlight "1970 eq" and then click "OK"

- the audacity equalizer should configure automatically. If it hasn't then select "1970 eq" from the "select curve" dropdown box.

- IN THE LATEST VERSION OF AUDACITY, YOU CAN ALSO APPLY THE ABOVE "1970 eq.txt" USING "Filter Curve EQ" in "EFFECTS"

- Once it has loaded and you've checked it looks like the image below, click OK to apply the eq to all highlighted songs and wait

- With all tracks still highlighted use "amplify" from EFFECTS and check there is a negative value displayed, then OK. If there is a zero displayed you are not in 32 bit mode so go back to the start.

- after that go through each song in turn and double click on the silent section at the end and delete it

- then under FILE choose "export multiple" and export the tracks in your preferred fdormat and location.

Question: no swapping channels?

Thanks for this LR!! I'm afraid I must have a newer version of Audacity (v 3.0.5) because I don't have an "equalization" option under Effect... just 'Filter Curve EQ' and 'Graphic EQ' (I have all my plugins enabled, including 'EQ XML to TXT Converter"). Maybe they changed things up with the latest Audacity upgrade?

It's called Graphic EQ now. It's the same I think except that you need to import a TXT not an XML file. I have updated the link above to include a txt file as well. https://tinyurl.com/expires-oct-2nd

I dunno. I guess if you want it to sound like the old boots, then yes. But otherwise no. If the song Get Back was issued as a single in the US with the guitar solo on the left then it seems likely the album was like that too.

Hi LR. I'm hitting a problem with this step. When I try to import the txt file, I'm getting this error message: "1970 eq.txt: is not a valid presets file".
Any clue as to what I'm doing wrong? I'm using the latest Audacity upgrade (just installed today).

Trying with a recent version of Audacity doesn't work for me either. Instead, I download this version (2.2.2) & successfully used the xml.

I can't promise that this is a perfect porting of the xml file for the current (3.0.5) version of Audacity but it SEEMS like it works (I had to take guesses to manually convert the xml file)

Copy/paste that to a .txt file and audacity 3.0.5's Filter Curve EQ SHOULD be able to import the file.

The results (to my ears) sound good

Hi LR. I'm hitting a problem with this step. When I try to import the txt file, I'm getting this error message: "1970 eq.txt: is not a valid presets file".
Any clue as to what I'm doing wrong? I'm using the latest Audacity upgrade (just installed today).
Oh. Hmm. The new Audacity has an XML to TXT convertor specifically for this purpose in the EFFECTS menu but you have to enable it with the "add/remove programs" at the top of the list. The txt file must have some special requirement.

If you do get it working could you please paste the contents of the working txt file as code in your next post? (use the </> button up top). I will then add it to my original post.

Thanks for the suggestion, LR.

I've enabled the EQ XML to TXT converter in Tools and tried importing your XML file. No luck. I'm stilling getting the "not a valid presets file" error.

It's possible that something got screwed up in the latest Audacity update. I may try downgrading to an earlier version and see if that works.
