I just learned that Johnny Hamp, probably disappointed with the bids at the auction decided to keep the tape for himself and his family. This could of course be an original first generation tape, the source of the acetate.

I think it would be because the idea was to synch the new audio to the already-filmed footage... a totally hare-brained plan that was doomed to failure from the outset. They would have needed to be watching the film as they played.
