Australian Rubber Soul Mono Needledrop

Post by RunoutGroove »

I have a vinyl copy of this, but it's beyond playing now. If anyone knows the history of the pressing, I'd like to know about it. I always thought it sounded excellent, way before the 2009 mono box set it was my go to for RS.

Mine is Parlophone Yellow with double lined 'Leeds Music' PMCO-1267, XEX579-1 (side a) and XEX580-1 (side b)

If anyone has a needledrop file, I would really appreciate it. Did Ebbetts do one?

I Am The Platypus:

MONO 17 Feb 1966 XEX 579-1 XEX 580-1 UK*

*Popularly referred to as the loud cut; quickly replaced by 579-4 / 580-4 in the UK but retained in Australia.

All my original LPs were stereo by choice. I must have considered the mono versions unfavorably back then. There are several UK "loud cut" transfers available but I have never seen one of these.

Nice link r9453. I never realized I had a Loud Cut  That explains why I liked it so much. I picked it up for pennies because the cover was virtually torn in two. The vinyl was mostly surface scratched, but is now hard to enjoy fully after years of play.

A UK Loud Cut would be the same pressing then?

A UK Loud Cut would be the same pressing then?

I would hesitate to say that without some qualification. Clearly they are not exactly the same since they were made half a world apart, at different factories. However, they were both EMI plants with essentially the same machinery installed.

Without going into too much detail about the manufacturing process, the XEX 579-1 / XEX 580-1 matrixes were "cut" aka "mastered" at EMI UK. The master was then used to create metal positive matrices, or "mothers". I'm not sure how many but at least one set of "mothers" was sent to Australia. (The mothers are used to produce the stampers that actually press the records.)

Starting with Rubber Soul EMI (Australia) reverted to importing mothers. UK mothers shipped to Australia were machine stamped with the matrix and lacquer numbers, but (unlike in the UK) they were normally not stamped with the mother numbers. Production of the EMI "loud cut" RS continued until June 1969 when the mono catalogue was discontinued.

Note the cover will not be identical to a UK cover.

Yes, the cover is, as pointed out in your link, way inferior to the UK G&L or EJ Day. Interesting observation that George's nose has a hot spot. Can't see it myself.

This is the PBthal rip of the Australian mono loud cut. I believe this rip is from either 2012 or 2015, not sure if he did any other rips of this album.

see link in later post

Wow, thanks, gear fab! I have a spreadsheet (PBTHAL Rips):
2009-06-23 The Beatles - 1965 - Rubber Soul (Australian Mono Loud Cut) AT33PTG
2012-04-20 The Beatles - 1965 - Rubber Soul (Australian Mono Loud Cut)
2015-03-14 The Beatles - 1965 - Rubber Soul (Australian Mono Loud Cut)
I sometimes wonder if this means he re-ripped the (same) LP three times or went back to his raw files and upgraded them.

I have that spreadsheet and was looking at it, but the way the rips are organized on File Factory can get confusing. I have really never heard a bad PBthal rip, regardless of the series. Would love to see Patrick join one of our boards so maybe he could answer some of our questions about his work and the differences in the rips.

I did find another PBthal rip of the Australian Loud Cut, it seems there were two AT33 series, with two different cartridges. Both can be downloaded here, I have labeled them to identify the two different versions and removed the previous link:
