A little history about the song. Written by the then famous team of Carole King & Gerry Goffin in 1961, it was recorded by heart throb 'Bobby Vee'. His real name was Robert Thomas Velline from Fargo, North Dakota. In the early 60s Bobby was a supporting act for The Beatles. Later on in 1972 he re-recorded a much slower version of the song for United Artists. He was convinced that this could be another hit for him. I always felt that because of his good nature the label never supported him properly with promotion and the record died. In his later version he changed the lyrics from "Take Good Care Of My Baby" to "Take Good Care Of My 'Lady'". Before the release of his 1972 album he asked me to photograph a painting he did for his album cover. UA nixed the idea and instead went for a more recent full face photo for the cover and stuck his painting in miniature on the back. Bob was gracious enough to give me photo credit on the album. Unfortunately he passed from alzheimers in October of 2016 at the age of 73. He was one of the nicest person I have ever met in the recording industry. RIP my friend. A great human being.

Bobby Vee's recording charted at #1 in most countries including the US & UK.

This is my Bobby Vee story: I had heard his name decades ago because of the Decca recording being described in The Days In Their Life as "The Beatles playing the Bobby Vee hit", but never really gave the guy any thought. But around 1985 I first saw That'll Be The Day with Ringo and David Essex (I mean they were in it, not that they watched it with me... ) and at the end of the film you hear the eponymous song. I really loved that record, and on the basis of that sought out more Buddy Holly stuff. But I could never, ever find that particular "take" of the song TBTD, even when the internet came along. Since Buddy seems to have recorded about 50 versions of it, I just assumed it was one of the weird variations.

Finally, only a few years ago, after looking for nigh on 40 years, I realised that the version at the end of the movie is actually by Bobby Vee! Well, in my defence it sounds like Buddy Holly and they copied the guitar solo to a tee (or should that be a "vee"? ) But the thing is, I like Bobby Vee's version way better than Buddy's. And it kind of raised him greatly in my estimation.
