Beatles Live In Paris 1965 (2023 Stereo Mix)

On Sunday 20th June 1965 the French capital’s Palais des Sports Indoor Arena hosted The Beatles’ opening day of their European tour with 15 shows in France, Italy and Spain over 9 days. There were two full shows in Paris that Sunday at 3pm and 9pm, with support act The Yardbirds (who had appeared with the Beatles at their London Christmas Show six months before). The Fab Four had recently finished recording and mixing their fifth UK album ”Help!” just three days before, and tonight’s twelve-song live set was videotaped by France Channel 2 (and broadcast on French TV on 31st October 1965). With a capacity crowd of 6000 for each show the audience gets raucous at times, and Paul & George have a bash at introducing some songs in French!

In preparing the original 1965 mono soundtrack for a new stereo mix I was presented with challenging technical issues which I did my best to correct or minimise. These include unbalanced microphone levels (or mics not turned on at all), sound dropouts, distortions, and electrical hum, but I persevered to finish this first-time stereo mix which faithfully captures the atmosphere and excitement of that warm summer night in 1965 when “Les Beatles” came to play. Footnote - The Yardbirds’ drummer Jim McCarty recalled: “We opened for the Beatles and had to use their amplifiers and drum kit. Jeff (Beck) always played LOUD so I had to really bash Ringo’s drums to be heard. During our last song I realised I’d actually broken Ringo’s favourite Ludwig snare drum! Their roadie, Mal Evans, said “don’t worry, I can fix that”. But when the Beatles walked on stage to perform Ringo waved his fist at me!”
