AI Specialists: That Means A Lot repair?

Post by mojofilter »

On the intro of "That Means A Lot," buried under the main audio at the beginning is the sound of a tape being rewound at high speed. I believe this must have come from the reverb chamber, which was creating the reverb for the vocal tracks. The main channel of the tape being rewound was turned down all the way, but the reverb send pot from it to the reverb chamber was not reduced entirely. That's why you can hear it. Does anyone think it's possible to create a version of this track with that sound removed?

I always wondered what that whirling sound was….and that’s a very good theory…hopefully it can be de-mixed out of it…I for one would love to hear it

The reason why I'm sure it is the sound of a tape being rewound is that I first worked in a radio station with Ampex AG-440 tape machines in 1979, and that is the sound it made when the tape was being wound in either direction, but it sounded specifically like this when in rewind mode. The tape still made some kind of contact with the playback head during fast winding in either direction.
