Help! Are these signatures real or fake?

Post by Appleyard »

Hi there, folks.
I was discussing an eBay purchase I just made of the White Album 1978 white vinyl French pressing on another thread.
It arrived today (sounds and looks very nice too!) and to my surprise it had these signatures on the collage/lyric sheet.
Would love to know if they are real or fakes (good fakes/bad fakes?) but I'm far from an expert on this matter and it seems that Beatle signatures varied one heck of a lot if Google images is anything to go by.
Any wisdom on these would be much appreciated.
Cheers!

You’ve got one of two things, an autographed poster worth thousands or a defaced white album insert.

If the poster is proper to the record then it’s unlikely to be genuine as that was issued in 1978. If it’s an original poster combined with the later pressing then it kind of looks like some fakery is at play. For a start, the poster is annotated as ‘Abbey Road 14 12 1968’. The Beatles aren’t recorded as being at the studios on that date - John was just out of filming the Rolling Stones Rock n Roll Circus.

The signatures look a bit wobbly, but that could be because the poster was signed while being held (if it’s genuine). It could also mean that it’s down to someone using one of those auto pens where an original signature is tracked and at the same time a connected pen transcribes the signature.

You could always ask the seller for the history. A word of caution though, even if it is genuine without provenance it’s going to be difficult to prove it is.

Nice find though - it does look good, and I’d be inclined to frame it and let peoples imaginations do the rest.

All good points, Bumblebee.
The poster certainly doesn't belong with the French white vinyl as on the other side under the lyrics it says it was printed in Great Britain by Garrod and Lofthouse. It also states that George's songs are published by Apple Music which I think had changed by the 1978 release of the white vinyl version.
The 14.12.68 date is very strange considering I think the other 3 Beatles were out the country!
The eBay purchase is a bit of a hodgepodge actually. Instead of the 4 photos, the 10 page booklet from the 1987 HMV cd box set has been included. (The 4 photos are reproduced on the centre pages.)
The eBay seller says he thought it was just the way the 1978 re-release was packaged and made no mention even of it being signed.
Think I'm going to do what you recommend, use my own imagination and just enjoy the fact that this pressing sounds amazing and looks beautiful! I'm noticing things in the mix I never noticed before and I've loved this album for over 30 years. Great condition too. Best £100 squid I ever spent! Hee hee!
