The Story Of Saturday Club

Post by Lord Reith »

I haven't even heard of this special before, but it was made by Kevin Howlett and broadcast in 1998. It has interviews with Brian Mathew, Bernie Andrews and more and is hosted by Joe Brown (late of The Bruvvers).

This is evidently how we got "Twist And Shout" from Saturday Club in August 1963. I'd always wondered where that one came from. But I wish Kevin had used Long Tall Sally instead. :(

1 hour 50 mins, in two parts. Enjoy!

UPDATE: harrythebannister has posted a better copy of this on page 2.

I actually found it on Mixcloud, but in really terrible shape. It ran slow and had azimuth problems and a lot of noise from a weak FM signal. But luckily the programme is in mono so I could fold it down to mono after correcting the azimuth and that got rid of some of the noise. So it doesn't sound too bad. A better copy would be nice if anyone out there has one?

Yes, it is a dilapidated mess.

I found the interviews in this special really interesting. I love Bernie saying that Jerry Lee wanted to record a whole album at the session! What a shame he didn't. Also we get Brian Mathew giving vocal impersonations of two figures from Beatles BBC Folklore: Jim Davison and John Clark-Maxwell. I had no idea Brian was so good at voices! Some of these interviews were re-used in the 2009 Beatles At The Beeb special but are more complete here.

If you're tossing up whether to download this grab it now. It's really good.
