Just wanted to share...

Post by bobzilla »

I finally got an external drive completely dedicated to the Beatles. In honor of the occasion I created an icon for the drive. (Files are still moving over, so it'll be closer to 1TB of free space when I'm done. So just ignore that part.)

Is there any truth in a comment I once read that when you copy things from one source to another, the copy loses quality slightly?

Not if the file is digital. Analogue yes.

On a Windows machine...
  1. Create a file in the root of the drive called autorun.inf
  2. Add the following text to the inf file

    Code: Select all

    [autorun]
    ICON=beatles.ico
  3. Add an icon file to the root of the drive (in my case it's called 'beatles.ico').
  4. Done
The inf file tells the drive what the icon file is called, so you can edit it to be whatever you want.
Also, you can create an ico file from any picture file. I used the online converter at https://icoconvert.com/
Also also, I went ahead and made those 2 files hidden after it was working so they didn't show up on the drive (under normal circumstances).

Thanks for reminding me of that possibility, your icon really turned out nicely. I used that autorun.inf route with CD-ROMs.

EDIT: Doesn't seem to work, I was wrong (For partitions you could also use right click - properties - customize. I'm not sure this is available on any machine though.)
