I always thought that it was just random " ooohs and aaahs" and noises that you get from an audience who are either laughing, cheering etc at what they see

With a little makeup they'd definitely pass for millitary themed clowns...

THE MYSTERY DEEPENS!

I've realised that the alternate intro to the Sgt Pepper Reprise on the mono album (obviously recorded at a different performance to the one on the stereo album) ALSO has laughter just before the band appear.

Maybe Sgt Pepper's trousers fell down when he bowed to the audience?

Lord Reith wrote: Tue Sep 28, 2021 10:23 am Why does the audience laugh when Paul introduces (CLEVER EDIT INSERTED HERE) Sgt Pepper and his band?

Does he fall over? Is he dressed in a strange costume? Is he actually a clown?

I will never have any peace until this question is answered. Interested to know your thoughts...
Because Paul likes random audience laughs and your reaction seem to be exactly what he was hoping for. From Jem Robert's really rather good Fab Fools, (which I am partway through), itself quoting Barry Miles' book.

Great post fabwill. Interesting that Paul also associated the laugh with Billy Shears specifically ... great minds think alike!

Wow. Macca and I are totally tuned in to each other. We both thought it was Billy Shears dropping his trousers!

Well, at least that mystery is solved. I hope someone bought him a new belt.

Lord Reith is clearly on Paul's wavelength, because Paul mentioned this random laughter on this very recent broadcast at just after 12 minutes https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m0010wp3
