The Question That Needs To Be Asked

Post by Lord Reith »

Why does the audience laugh when Paul introduces (CLEVER EDIT INSERTED HERE) Sgt Pepper and his band?

Does he fall over? Is he dressed in a strange costume? Is he actually a clown?

I will never have any peace until this question is answered. Interested to know your thoughts...

He falls over, dressed to look like Keith Richards:

Well....it's all because he's wearing an ill-fitting wig like the one you're wearing, you see. So, it's the wig, not the costume causing the outbreak of mirth.

That's strange, I don't hear laughter, just applause and general excitement as he takes the stage. There's laughter when the band first enters though, presumably they're clowning aorund. Are ageing ears deceiving me?

He probably forgot his lighter...
so, at the last second before his intro,
Billy is unable to light the joint...
(fumbling and on the verge of panic)
somebody throws a BIC adjustable Jelly Baby up on stage...
the cherry starts to glow...
and, the first chorus goes off without a hitch--
with a little help from my friends!
Paper, plastic...or, glass???
NEXT!!!

Laughter? Could you be confusing it with the ending of Within You Without You?

Oh yeah that's what I meant to say. When Paul introduces the band and the audience laughs. Why?

I take it the band does something funny when they come on - maybe in reference to the clowning around the Beatles used to do on stage?

If I recall correctly, didn't George Martin say he used crowd noise he recorded years before at a Beyond The Fringe show?
