BBC POTPOURI

Post by Lord Reith »

Here is an album I compiled and posted a few years ago on BZ. It's a collection of BBC radio sessions by various artists, taken from BBC transcription discs. There's some good stuff here, so I thought I'd post it again for those who missed it.

I love Mother In Law. I'm sure John must have sang that one at some point - he didn't get along with Cyn's mother!

A World Of Our Own [The Seekers]
Blues With A Feeling [Fleetwood Mac]
Can I Get A Witness [Tom Jones]
Delta Lady [Joe Cocker]
Down the Road Apiece [The Rolling Stones]
Fanny Mae [The Rollling Stones]
Goin' Out Of My Head [Cilla Black]
Goodbyeee [Peter Cook And Dudley Moore]
I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself [Dusty Springfield]
I Won't Be The Same Without Her [The Rockin' Berries]
I'll Never Find Another You [The Seekers]
Janine [David Bowie]
Mother-In-Law [The Easybeats]
Nitty Gritty [Manfred Mann]
Sorry Suzanne [The Hollies]
Stone Free [The Jimi Hendrix Experience]
There's A Kind Of Hush [Herman's Hermits]
Watch Your Step [The Spencer Davis Group]
We Gotta Get Out Of This Place [The Animals]
You Shook Me [Led Zeppelin]
You're No Good [The Swinging Blue Jeans]

Day dreaming a bit here but it would be so cool if you were to make a Queen or Led Zepp bbc set as well

Isn't there an official LZ set? I know there's ones for Cream and Hendrix.

There is one as well for Queen but as usual they left much stuff out and the sound quality isn't the best. For Zepp you're much beter with the Empress Valley set (the one with the Maxell ad on the cover) for Queen I remember comparing the version which came out round 2001 made to look like official mini lp editions of the albums to the Trantura (the one with very cool pics of the Queen II era) and thought the Tarantura sounded best because to me it sounded like they didn't denoise it. but I think Tarantura was missing one show with live audience

Lord Reith, thank you so much for all the updates all these years!

In March 2015, your BZ comment on the set (then called "BBC Sessions by other artists") was as follows:

This baby runs the gamut of all styles imaginable! Some of my personal favourites are the two Seekers tracks, The Easybeats version of the 1961 classic Mother In Law (which should have been a Beatles number sung by George in the vein of Three Cool Cats and Youngblood!), Watch Your Step (where you can hear the origins of the I Feel Fine riff), a blistering Stone Free by Jimi Hendrix, a fantastic R&B take on Down The Road Apiece by the early Stones, and the hilarious Goodbyeee by Pete And Dud (which you can also find on the [The Beatles On TV (BBC Archives)] dvd).

Grab this, you won't be sorry!

Also, there was a question related to the accompanying image:

Q: Thank you Lord Reith for this compilation. Is the image an image for the disc? (I ask because it seems to be a bit small). Thanks again for sharing.

Lord Reith: No it was just to catch people's attention. It's side 2 of the Transcription Service version of From Us To You (only side 1 has audio). There's no artwork but someone here can do a cover if they want.

The front cover was created by Blockboy.

Thank you - the more 60s BBC stuff the better.

(I do want to track down all of the Seekers and Searchers BBC recordings, in case anyone with more is reading. I think there's just two or three Searchers tracks that I know I'm missing...)

And don't make me show you my Seekers collection...

Actually The Seekers and The Searchers are both in the same show, so here is the whole show. Also features Sandie shaw and John Mayall.

Have you seen the recent documentary "The Seekers A World Of Their Own"? They have some interesting things to say.
