Surprising Sweet Crackup: Did Nick Lowe copy John Lennon?

Post by alphabeatles »

1974: John Lennon releases Surprise, Surprise (Sweet Bird Of Paradox) with a particular riff (drumbeat followed by a progression of 7 sax [?] and guitar notes)

1979: Nick Lowe releases Cracking Up with a similar, sped up version of the same riff (guitar stab followed by a progression of 7 bass notes)

Hear the riffs side by side (repeated 3 times):

I first heard this in my head and tracked down the original songs to check! What do we think?

Surely this happens a lot in music-land.

I meant the riff, not the song ;-)

Isn't that what the boss says when you ask for a raise-?

The Nick Lowe riff sounds more like "Paperback Writer" to me.
