Covid and Ukraine have definitely affected the world economy, but it's difficult to deny that opportunistic manufacturers and retailers are using it as an excuse to raise prices and gouge ordinary people. It's given them the perfect excuse and cover.

Yikes! Just a comment on the previous comments about the economy. Unfortunately, the "global supply chain" has become so shallow in this "global economy" that any minor disruptions has a reverberation that affects all of us. When the "supply chain" works the way it is supposed to, prices are stable and inflation is limited. It's worked well for the last 20-30 years. But there has been so much disruption over the past 3-4 years, starting with Covid, and then the transition of Russia from semi-capitalistic back to authoritarianism, we have serious reverberations (to use an audio metaphor)in this economy.

Yes, there are opportunists, cashing in, but the disruption is real and there are efforts being made to stabilize it. We haven't seen volatility in world economies like this since the 1970s.

Covid and Ukraine spendings would seem chump change next to what G7 plans to throw in the furnace under the pretext of fighting the "global warming".

You got that right.

Ah ha ha. There is a price cap on the Russian oil supplies. As for the gas, those countries/local suppliers who had long-term contracts with the Russian gas supplier, enjoyed the old price, and those who hadn't, for them the gas price is dictated solely by the stock exchange - in their own countries, or the EU.

Britain does generate electricity from lots of sources including nuclear - unaffected by Ukraine, renewables - unaffected by Ukraine, gas and oil - how much of our electricity production is from Ukrainian/Russian gas or oil? About five percent, and that could be sourced elsewhere. If gas/oil doubles it puts 5 percent on the electricity bill, if the eletricity companies do nothing to source cheaper supplies.Yet we are smacked with a 100 percent increase and people sitting in the dark while energy companies post record profits. How blatant does this rip-off have to be for people to see it?
