Revolver Deluxe Edition - dating the outtakes?

Post by onemojofilter »

First of all I want to thank Mike Carrera for posting this glorious track-by-track evaluation of what's what.

Maybe I'm not alone in this, but I have a particular OCD with dates (especially previously unheard outtakes!) and I'd like to start a discussion about what the general consensus might be with regards to dating these outtakes. Some might be easier than others, given Lewisohn's work (and others).

By Mike Carrera
DISC TWO- OUTTAKES PART 1
1-TOMORROW NEVER KNOWS (TAKE 1) 03:29 –PARTIALLY NEW
I believe this is already established as April 6th, 1966?

2-TOMORROW NEVER KNOWS (MONO MIX RM 11) 03:02 –PARTIALLY NEW
Since it's a mono remix, this would be June 6th, 1966

3-GOT TO GET YOU INTO MY LIFE (FIRST VERSION / TAKE 5) 04:08 –PARTIALLY NEW
Given it's take 5, then this is April 7th, 1966. By the way, am I the only one who noticed that the stabbing guitar chords in the second half of each verse is pretty much identical to the stabbing guitar chords in "Getting Better"? (did Macca recycle that for Pepper?)

4-GOT TO GET YOU INTO MY LIFE (SECOND VERSION / UNNUMBERED MIX) 02:33 –NEW
The fact that they call this an unnumbered mix (plus the overdubs give it away - this is not the basic track), then it suggests that it's April 11th, 1966, since Lewisohn says guitars were overdubbed on April 11th, 1966

5-GOT TO GET YOU INTO MY LIFE (SECOND VERSION / TAKE 8) 02:40 - PARTIALLY NEW
The horns were recorded on May 18th, 1966 onto take 8 per Lewisohn (which makes this, what? 'Take 8, track 2' as they said in the days of "Please Please Me"?). A new vocal was recorded later, but if this is take 8, this is May 18th, 1966.

6-LOVE YOU TO (TAKE 1) 02:38 -NEW
Take one was April 11th, 1966.

7-LOVE YOU TO (UNNUMBERED REHEARSAL) 01:33 -NEW
All the basic tracks were recorded on April 11th, 1966, so if George and Paul are running through the song, it would make sense that it happened on that day between takes. (Overdubs were done on April, 13th, 1966).

8-LOVE YOU TO (TAKE 7) 02:53 -NEW
Take 7 belongs on April 11th, 1966.

9-PAPERBACK WRITER (TAKES 1 & 2 / BACKING TRACK) 03:35 - PARTIALLY NEW
April 13th, 1966 basic track recordings (Vocal overdubs done on April 14th, 1966.

10-RAIN (TAKE 5 / ACTUAL SPEED) 02:35 -NEW
Per Lewisohn, this is April 14th, 1966. As was mentioned on other threads, the bass was added on the next day (so Paul doesn't play his part THAT fast - but Ringo does!!)

11-RAIN (TAKE 5 / SLOWED DOWN FOR MASTER TAPE) 03:11 -NEW
I believe this should be dated as April 14th as well.

12-DOCTOR ROBERT (TAKE 7) 02:57 -NEW
Both Mark Lewisohn and beatlesbible indicate that the basic track was recorded on April 17th, 1966 and overdubs for vocals took place on April 19th, 1966. So, 04/19/1966 it is.

13-AND YOUR BIRD CAN SING (FIRST VERSION / TAKE 2) 02:12 – PARTIALLY NEW
April 20th, 1966.

14-AND YOUR BIRD CAN SING (FIRST VERSION / TAKE 2 / GIGGLING) 02:21 - PARTIALLY NEW
April 20th, 1966.

DISC 3- OUTTAKES PART 2
1-AND YOUR BIRD CAN SING (SECOND VERSION / TAKE 5)02:18 –NEW
April 26th, 1966.

2-TAXMAN (TAKE 11)02:35 -PARTIALLY NEW
April, 21st, 1966

3-I’M ONLY SLEEPING (REHEARSAL FRAGMENT)00:46 -PARTIALLY NEW
April 27th, 1966 (assuming the rehearsal took place the same day as they started recording it)

4-I’M ONLY SLEEPING (TAKE 2)02:26 - PARTIALLY NEW
April 27th, 1966

5-I’M ONLY SLEEPING (TAKE 5)02:41 -NEW
April 27th, 1966

6-I’M ONLY SLEEPING (MONO MIX RM1)03:04 -NEW
RM1 puts this on May 6th, 1966.

7-ELEANOR RIGBY (SPEECH BEFORE TAKE 2)02:10 - PARTIALLY NEW
April 28th, 1966

8-ELEANOR RIGBY (TAKE 2)02:17 -NEW
April 28th, 1966

9-FOR NO ONE (TAKE 10 / BACKING TRACK)02:21 -NEW
May 9th, 1966

10-YELLOW SUBMARINE (SONGWRITING WORK TAPE / PART 1)01:01 -NEW
This is really a John Lennon home demo which makes this challenging to date. I'd be inclined to date this around anywhere from late January to early March of 1966 when they didn't have much on their calendar (which freed up John to tell a journalist that the Beatles were more popular than Jesus).

Thoughts?

11-YELLOW SUBMARINE (SONGWRITING WORK TAPE / PART 2)04:39 -NEW
Call it a fan's faith in their superhuman songwriting abilities: I'll assume this was on the same day as take one. May, 26th, 1966.

12-YELLOW SUBMARINE (TAKE 4 BEFORE SOUND EFFECTS)02:35 –NEW
May 26th, 1966

13-YELLOW SUBMARINE (HIGHLIGHTED SOUND EFFECTS)03:00 –PARTIALLY NEW
June 1st, 1966

14-I WANT TO TELL YOU (SPEECH & TAKE 4)01:21 –NEW
June 2nd, 1966

15-HERE, THERE AND EVERYWHERE (TAKE 6)02:27 -PARTIALLY NEW
June 14th, 1966?

16-SHE SAID SHE SAID (JOHN'S DEMO)01:08
I'm gonna say this Lennon Demo dates from the same period as the Yellow Submarine songwriting work tape. Mid January through early March of 1966.

17- SHE SAID SHE SAID (TAKE 15 / BACKING TRACK REHEARSAL)03:22 -NEW
June 21st, 1966 (did Paul really walk out of this one?)

Any thoughts/corrections appreciated!
My opinions are my own, but, my dog tends to agree with everything I say.

Thanks for an interesting post and for sharing your thoughts with the rest of us.
You have done a fine job and I am not a wisecracker to correct anything.
I have a lot of respect for you so what I'm posting are only my thoughts - and I'm not saying I'm right or anything.

4-GOT TO GET YOU INTO MY LIFE (SECOND VERSION / UNNUMBERED MIX) - Yes, the guitars were overdubbed on April 11th but are the guitars on this track overdubbed or a part of the complete band performance? If the latter then the track is from April 8th. If you're right the the track is from April 8th AND 11th.

8-LOVE YOU TO (TAKE 7) - I think this track also includes the overdubs from April 13th, so therefore the recording dates are April 11th AND 13th.

11-RAIN (TAKE 5 / SLOWED DOWN FOR MASTER TAPE) - Doesn't this track include the overdubs from April 16? What are your thoughts? I'm confused.

3-I’M ONLY SLEEPING (REHEARSAL FRAGMENT) - According to 'Anthology' this track is from the remake on April 29th.

4-I’M ONLY SLEEPING (TAKE 2) - As this track is from the same remake session it must also be from April 29th.

15-HERE, THERE AND EVERYWHERE (TAKE 6) - Take 1-5 were recorded on June 14th but if this is really take 6 then it is from June 16th.

Again, you have done a fine job and I'd be interested to have your comments on the thoughts I have (which are mostly based on Lewisohn's books but that's not saying I'm right or anything).

Thanks! I'm encouraging discussion/debate so it's all good. If I were so certain of everything I wouldn't have put it up for people to pick apart, so I'm glad you're participating!
4-GOT TO GET YOU INTO MY LIFE (SECOND VERSION / UNNUMBERED MIX) - Yes, the guitars were overdubbed on April 11th but are the guitars on this track overdubbed or a part of the complete band performance? I’m thinking that the guitar stabs that I’m comparing to Getting Better are part of the original basic track but the guitar riffs in harmony (later replaced by the horns) are the overdubs. But technically you are right - they are representative of both dates. I guess I’m trying to establish that this track is current as of 04/11/1966 (if that makes sense?).

(edit): This is the version with the horns...so it belongs with 05/18/1966 when the horns were overdubbed...
8-LOVE YOU TO (TAKE 7) - I think this track also includes the overdubs from April 13th, so therefore the recording dates are April 11th AND 13th.
Same. I’ll consider this “current as of 04/13/1966”.
11-RAIN (TAKE 5 / SLOWED DOWN FOR MASTER TAPE) - Doesn't this track include the overdubs from April 16? What are your thoughts? I'm confused.
Well, this track has the lead vocal which apparently was recorded over take 5 on 04/14/1966. (What ticks me off about the original speeded up version included is that they obviously took take 5 with the overdubbed bass and just sped it up to the original speed - but the bass wasn't there. Paul isn't playing that fast! Wish someone could remove the bass on the faster version since it’s misleading.)

But I digress. To your question. It doesn’t have all of them since John’s harmony over the "Rain" chorus isn’t there and neither are the vocals from the 16th from Paul and George for that matter. It’s a hybrid of sorts I guess because clearly ADT is present in John's vocal? I’ll have to research this a little more.
3-I’M ONLY SLEEPING (REHEARSAL FRAGMENT) - According to 'Anthology' this track is from the remake on April 29th.
Doh! Thanks! I went from memory on this one and should have cracked open Anthology 2.
4-I’M ONLY SLEEPING (TAKE 2) - As this track is from the same remake session it must also be from April 29th.
Right again, brutha. I'll review and revise.
You are correct again. This is indeed take 6 and I wasn't paying attention. It belongs to 06/16/1966.

Thanks for your feedback!

Hey there flabbyroad... Thanks for the comments... My take on this is: if horns are present (which they are) then this can be no earlier than 05/18/1966... I believe the musicians were booked for that day only.

I believe your images bear this out. E59735 entry shows that brass was recorded on May 18th. E59875 doesn't mention brass at all. E60603 says it was a rough mix for George Martin to score the brass parts.

is a home demo, where did it come from? Paul Archives? Lennon Archives? Julian? Is there more on this tape?

Hmm. Makes sense since Yoko and Sean are in control of the Lennon estate and likely there is much more where that came from.

11-YELLOW SUBMARINE (SONGWRITING WORK TAPE / PART 2)04:39 -NEW
Call it a fan's faith in their superhuman songwriting abilities: I'll assume this was on the same day as take one. May, 26th, 1966.

extra info:

George Martin was ill with food poisoning, so the session went ahead without a producer. Martin did, however, send his fiancée Judy Lockhart-Smith to the session; she remained mostly in the Studio Three control room.
https://www.beatlesbible.com/1966/05/26 ... submarine/

Producer George Martin was absent due to illness and engineer Geoff Emerick was therefore the de-facto producer.

I have a clear memory of them doing the rhythm track of ‘Yellow Submarine’, because George Martin was off with a bad bout of food poisoning and he sent his [soon-to-become] wife Judy along instead to keep an eye on things, and I suppose to make sure we all behaved ourselves! She sat in George’s place at the console making sure that the Beatles got everything they wanted.

The Beatles spent much of the afternoon and evening rehearsing the song.

This BEFORE Take One at the end hear "Geoff take over now" or on those lines
