Was there ever a The Beatles Bootleg Recordings 1964 or 1965 or 1966, etc.?

Post by Kusaywa »

The Beatles released (briefly) The Beatles Bootleg Recordings 1963 in order to (at least according to Wikipedia) "extend the copyright of the 1963 recordings under EU law by 20 years – the EU protects recordings for 70 years only if they are formally released." Did they ever release a 1964 or 1965 or 1966, etc.? Was it so brief, no one knew about it? Hard to believe The Beatles would allow them to enter the public domain...

No. They were rumoured to follow up the 1963 collection but they never did. They may have released them for a second and then deleted them again before anyone noticed, though. If that was enough to keep them copyrighted.

No, the release was basically a rushed kneejerk response to a misunderstanding of EU regulations. Those included a clause that extended the copyright specifically for the performers to 70 years if the recording was released in at least a 'communicated' form (eg using radio or internet streaming), also called 'use it or lose it'. However that turned out to apply to already publicized works only, not studio outtakes for example. Not to mention Universal remains the owner of the studio recordings, the BBC of their material and most post-1962 songs have publication rights owned by Sony Music Publishing (the Northern Songs catalogue transferred through Michael Jackson).

No, we just have to wait until they have to rerelease more recordings.
