We all know what the outcome will be. There is no question that the tape is EMI property and the notion that it somehow isn't because they didn't want it anymore is nuts. It'll go back to Abbey Road and into their vault, and maybe one day we'll hear a twenty second extract in a 2 hour BBC special.

How should we perceive EMI today regarding ownership of the tape? Would that be Universal, or Apple?
And would the physical tape archive still be at Abbey Road Studios since their relation with EMI is a thing of the past? Who would pay for the storage cost?

I am not sure that it is that simple ... EMI said to destroy the tape ... but it is not anybody's right to search a dustbin and claim property either.

Yeah, but saying "destroy something" and then it doesn't get destroyed doesn't make it the property of the person who finds it. EMI never relinquished ownership of the tape like happens when something is legally sold to another party. If they had sold the tape to Emerick it would be legally his, or even if they had signed something saying "We give this tape to you and relinquish all claim of ownership". But they didn't, he just took it home. So it's still theirs.

Just imagine if you gave some personal papers to a PA and said "please shred these for me". Years later you find that this guy never shredded them and so claims they are his. But they are still your personal effects, even if you wanted them shredded.

I just love that line'''(money money money/erase erase erase...)
it's from a song by St. Johnny called Scuba Diving(cool video).
