Re: Michael Nesmith Dies
This is really sad for me. I loved The Monkees almost as much as The Beatles as a kid. Their tv show was just the funniest thing I had ever seen. Mike was always my favourite because although Davy was better looking and Mickey Dolenz a better singer, Mike just always came across as the one in charge. He had that effortless quality of leadership that John Lennon also had. And such a dry, hilarious delivery to his lines.
Later on I heard some of his solo music and realised what a talented songwriter he was. I also realised that he had wriotten some of my favourite Monkees tunes including Papa Gene Blues and The Girl That I Knew Somewhere. He was a very distinctive songwriter and his material always had an original bent to it. I just love Tapoica Tundra, Circle Sky and Sunny Girlfriend, even though I have absolutely no idea what any of the lyrics mean! The Monkees are often dismissed as bubblegum, but in my book they were pretty talented guys.
My favourite Mike Nesmith song is Nine Times Blue, nothing but a quick solo demo recorded during the Headquarters sessions I think. One of the sincerest and most moving love songs ever written. RIP Mike... I for one will miss you greatly.

Re: Michael Nesmith Dies
I feel much the same way as you about Nez.
Growing up, I only had one album of the Monkees and it was The Best of the Monkees. It only had one Nez song, Listen To The Band. It was my favorite of the bunch. Eventually I got all of the albums and solo albums and I gravitated to Mike’s songs. It wasn’t just his songs but his voice. Micky May have had one of Rocks greatest singing voice, Nez was more distinct.
Fast forward to 2016 when Good Times was released. Me & Magdalena was the best song I heard in years. It brought tears to my eyes.
RIP Mike. Thanks for the music.
