The Rocky & The Rubbers project

Post by EdinSc »

A FAB FOUR FANTASY... A FAB FOUR FANTASY...
In the afterglow of their iconic 1967 LP in which the Fab Four had assumed an alter ego, the boys elected to again record under another name. In addition, the planned LP would be made in one day -- a sort-of "Day In The Life" of a group of struggling, unknown middle-aged rock 'n' rollers. But "Rocky and the Rubbers" proved to not carry the same gravitas as "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band," and the one day they chose -- Jan. 3, 1969 -- didn't prove to be their most creative. The effort was flawed from the beginning: The plan was to start out with some oldies and sprinkle in their new material. But the Boys forgot to bring to the session the lyrics to the songs they'd performed flawlessly as younger men. While magic new tunes were anticipated, what came about was mostly some poor renditions of tracks from their "White Album" and wasted moments of inane jamming about Hari Krishna. John, whose pseudonym for the project was "Dirty Mac", neglected to introduce the band until near the end of the session (it's actually a farewell and heard at the end of track 20). Though it grinds along slowly at first, the show hits its stride towards the end. It was supposed to have a cold ending -- Magic Alex spent $55,000 to devise a "sonic demulsiviver" machine that made it sound as if the tape ran out unexpectedly during "I've Got A Feeling." But after listening to playbacks Paul insisted on adding two more of his new songs to the LP, past the expensive fake tape malfunction Apple paid for. Then, with Yoko leaning on him, John then demanded an "encore" including his unfinished "Across the Universe" and another of his favorite oldies. George, who was actually a willing participant in the project, then proposed he be given a second clip of his "All Things Must Pass." He was, though his band mates clearly didn't want it on the project. Ringo said nothing, even though disappointed that the two new songs he took to the session were never further developed. Although the plan was to include only Jan. 3 recordings, a few substitutions took place. Paul said the Jan. 3 "Lucille" was sub-par, and had everyone reassemble on Jan. 7 for another try. The new songs (tracks 22 & 23) were recorded at another session held Jan. 8. Producer Phil Spector was called in to fix this disaster, and tried adding a female chorus to "Harry Pinsker," but gave up after deeming the package unlistenable. He blamed George Martin for forgetting to flip a switch that would have recorded the session in stereo instead of mono. Apple Records spokesmen denied that this project and the sessions ever took place, and added that there was nothing commercially viable in the vaults. This project was rehabilitated when Giles Martin remixed it in four-stem stereo.
